Police Search For Robber Who Held Up Burger King

Evanston police are searching for an armed robber who approached two employees at the Burger King in the 1800 block of Dempster Street and demanded money from the safe.

Evanston police are searching for an armed robber who they say held up the Burger King at 1829 Dempster St. early Wednesday morning. The man entered the store carrying a handgun around 6:10 a.m., according to police, just after it opened for business. He approached the two employees on duty and demanded they give him money from the store’s safe, then forced them into the store's freezer, police said. They handed over approximately $1,000 in cash and coins to the man, who ran out the rear service door, according to police.  Contacted Wednesday morning, a Burger King employee declined to comment on the incident. Evanston police detectives are reviewing video surveillance cameras from the restaurant, and released a description and photographs…

Excellent information, Mofly. Perhaps we should boycott Burger King and others who fail to protect their employees.   more ›

About Town

Bullets & Big Macs

We're SO not lovin' it.

Last Friday afternoon, driving my kids to countless errands around town, I felt the dreaded "3:30 p.m. drag."  If you’re an adult, you know the feeling all too well.  I knew a cold, caffeinated drink would wake me up.  I aimed my car toward the McDonald's drive-thru on Dempster, but traffic was annoyingly backed up.  Flashing emergency lights near the corner of Dodge and Dempster indicated some sort of situation.  As my daughter and I neared the intersection, it was apparent that my icy Diet Coke wouldn’t come from McDonald’s: yellow tape was wrapped around the parking lot; police cars and unmarked vehicles blocked every entrance and exit; a helicopter hovered above the snarled traffic.  As the gaping traffic crawled past McDonald’s, we …

Sheila, Thank you for sharing your experience with the greater community. While I'm glad you and your children were unharmed physically, it's clear you've all been emotionally wounded by the events that day.   more ›

Evanston Depot?

Ideas for Evanston Plaza's empty parking lot.

With so much debate swirling around what to do with Evanston Plaza at Dempster Street and Dodge Avenue, has anyone stopped to notice what regularly happens in that vacant parking lot? I frequent Evanston Plaza on a daily basis.  After I drop my kids at school, I’ll often drive through the Dunkin’ Donuts drive-thru for a large Latte Lite (not because it’s my favorite cup of coffee, but because it’s easy and fast and it allows me stay in my car on cold days).   The parking lot attracts a plethora of drivers, and if you haven’t noticed them, I’m here to report what kind: --Folks eating their fast-food drive-thru meals in their cars --Trucks killing time until their next delivery --Taxis/limos waiting for their next call --Buses waiting for …

I think your boycott idea is a good one. Are there any options to change the contract so that Dominicks doesn't have so much power over the success or failure of our community's mall? Leaving this mall empty is a waste and an eyesore. How about condos, townhouses and a park? How about a CVS or Walgreens or Body Shop? Or another larger dollar store? How about getting a mid-level spa/nail salon or …   more ›

About Town

Are NU Students Getting It Their Way?

Orrington Avenue's Burger King (aka "The BK Lounge") seems to be one of just a few places Around Town open 24/7.

It certainly isn't news to Northwestern University students that the Burger King on  Orrington is open 24/7.  I just find it amusing that the spot is referred to as "The BK Lounge".  With its free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, spacious dining room, an ATM machine within reach of the cue and its proximity to campus, it seems as though good-old Burger King meets the late-night study needs of college kids in Evanston -- and then some.  However, a quick check of Yelp.com tells me many NU students aren't enamored with the fact that Burker King is one of the only places in E-town to go late-night.  For all you NU parents reading this from afar, rest assured: I don't advocate that your kids stay out all night.  If my kids were in college right now, you…
