Dave's Down to Earth Rock shop displays the largest free fossil collections in the country for free.
Feel like taking a trip 600 million years back in time? You don’t have to go far. Evanston’s gem of a business, Dave’s Down to Earth Rock Shop, at 705 Main Street, sells artifacts that are older than the Earth. “We sell a lot of meteorites that predate our solar system,” said manager Zack White. “ You have a rock in here that is even older than the universe. It’s a hard concept to understand -- even for me.” At Dave’s Down to Earth Rock Shop, customers can purchase artifacts, fossils, minerals, gems, jewelry, Native American art and even healing rocks. “People are pretty much in awe and shock when they come in for the first time,” said White. “If you’ve been to a rock shop before they are usually little, but here, there are so many rocks …

The store is offering up to 40% discounts as it clears its inventory. Ten 27 Cycles reopened under a new name after four decades as Turin Bicycle. The new store will be part of a national chain.
After more than four decades operating as Turin Bicycle and then as Ten 27 Cycles, the independent bike store at 1027 Davis St. in Evanston will close this winter and reopen as part of a national chain. Proprietor Chris Mailing took over as the majority owner of Turin Bicycle in 2004 and became sole owner in May. But Lee Katz, who opened the Evanston store in 1971 and co-owns a Turin Bicycle store in Denver, had the rights to the name. Mailing found himself embroiled in a legal battle as he tried to tie his renamed Ten 27 Cycles to Turin in ads and on the business' website, using the old store name. “It's just turned out to be a lot more difficult and a lot more expensive than I had expected at the outset," Mailing said. "There's just been…

Tiny Dog CUPCAKE! and Merle's BBQ both closed after the New Year.
There are now fewer places to find cupcakes and smoked meats in Evanston. As of Jan. 1, both Merle's BBQ and Tiny Dog CUPCAKE! have closed up shop. A note posted on the Merle's website noted that the business lost its lease on Jan. 1. "We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We will miss you very much but wish you all a great 2012," the site reads. "We will be happy to serve you at Davis Street Fishmarket, 501 Davis Street." Merle's faced negative publicity in February after the city blamed it for an illness outbreak at Haven parent/teacher conferences. Thirty people became sick from chicken that was served "buffet style" at the school, and the city said improper handling of the food was to blame. A spokesman…

Mash Up! event will bring together community and business leaders.
Former US senator and ambassador Carol Moseley Braun will speak to business leaders in Evanston Wednesday evening at the Chamber of Commerce's Mash Up! event. Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl and a member of the Northwestern University Board of Trustees, Sona Wang, will also participate. Organizers say that Mash Up! was created out of a need to bring together members of the local business community to help each other succeed. About 20 Evanston businesses are sponsoring the event, which will cost $125 per person. "We need to communicate with one another on an on-going basis. The Mash Up! is a first step in bringing businesses together for meaningful dialogue. As a group we need to shape, inform and define what we believe the business …

Market Fresh Books brings new scale to area in selling items by the pound.
In a town saturated with options for bookworms, Market Fresh Books stands out for its peculiar business model: used books are sold by the pound—$3.99 per pound, to be exact. Co-owner Susan Frischer says the scale beside the register is the kind of peculiarity that she hopes customers will appreciate and subsequently return to when they need their next literature fix. "We were trying to think of ways to be memorable and have people talk about the store—something unique," she said. In addition, selling books by the pound makes the job that much easier for Frischer, who practically shudders at the prospect of individually pricing the thousands of books in the store's inventory. Frischer brought Market Fresh to Evanston with her husband Paul …
