New Bakery, Craft Brewery Coming to Evanston

A new bakery is set to open this spring on Dempster Street, while a craft brewery is planned for the city's west side. Read on for more business openings and closings.

Hewn Bakery Opening Soon On Dempster Co-owners Julie Matthei and Ellen King are planning to open a takeout bakery called Hewn at 810 Dempster St. According to Matthei, they’re currently working on obtaining permits and renovating the retail space, and hope to open sometime in late spring or early summer.  Temperance Beer Looking For West Side Brewery Evanston architect and homebrewer Josh Gilbert is planning to open a brewery in west Evanston, where he’ll produce tallboys and kegs to sell to restaurants in the area. Eventually, Gilbert hopes to open a tap room on site where people can taste his beer and buy some food. He’s still working on finalizing a location but is hoping for a spring 2013 opening.  Want more news the business scene in …

Can Evanston Make Money Selling Water?

Four local journalists talk about the city's proposal to raise money by selling Evanston water to more municipalities on the ECTV show "The Reporters."

Pop-Up Restaurant Concept Slated For Chicago Avenue

Lucky Platter owner Eric Singer is planning to rotate local chefs in and out of a restaurant space at 1307 Chicago Ave. for “pop-up” dinner series.

There isn’t even a sign over the door yet, but chefs are already scheduling “pop-up” dinners at Company in Evanston, a new restaurant concept from the owner of Lucky Platter. Riffing off the popularity of underground dining and supper clubs, Company will house a rotating calendar of chefs at a 500 square foot, 18-seat space at 1307 Chicago Ave. “It’s a conceptual idea and a conceptual spot,” says Eric Singer, who has owned Lucky Platter for the past 21 years. “No one’s really tried this yet.” Want the dish on the newest bars and restaurants in Evanston?
