Police Investigate Death of Man Found on Benson Avenue

Evanston police report the death is being investigated as a potential suicide after the man's body was found at Davis Street and Benson Avenue.

Evanston police are investigating the death of a man who was found lying on the sidewalk at Davis Street and Benson Avenue early Wednesday morning. Around 3:30 a.m. on the Fourth of July, police were called to the intersection after a witness reported a man on the ground, Evanston Police Cmdr. Perry Polinski said in a statement released by the department. A witness who had been waiting for a bus at the Davis Street El Station told police the man had jumped from the roof of the Sherman Plaza Parking Garage, Polinski said in the statement. Police are investigating the death as a potential suicide. The man's identity is being withheld while police notify his family, according to Polinski's statement. Why Don't We Have A Visitors' Center?

A recent trip to Madison, Wisconsin made me realize: we may be overlooking the obvious.

This past weekend, I traveled to Madison, Wisconsin to visit my sister and her family.  You may recall from an earlier post that they used to live in Evanston but decided to move to Madison for a variety of very rational reasons. Madison’s a town that’s frequently compared to Evanston.  They’re both college towns.  They’re both situated on lakes.  They both have vibrant, intellectual, artistic and vocal populations.  Neither town is afraid to show its “funk.” While walking down Madison’s main drag, I was struck by how similar – and dissimilar – the two towns actually are. Madison and Evanston both have their share of businesses (the “usual suspects” if you will) which sustain many college towns:  Urban Outfitters, American Apparel, Noodles…
