Meet Snickers, the Free-Spirited Pup

Evanston Patch regularly features pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter.

Hi! My name is Snickers, and I'm living at C.A.R.E. until I find my forever home. I’m a free-spirited, enthusiastic guy with energy to burn. I’m also sweet, friendly and good-hearted with a want-to-learn attitude.  The volunteers taking care of me say my joyful attitude is downright contagious. Like many young dogs, I have an inquisitive spirit that can get me in trouble, but training will help me channel my curiosity and help me mature. I look forward to getting out and enjoying life—there’s so much to do and learn that I can't wait! Snickers' Stats: C.A.R.E. to Meet Snickers? Please come to C.A.R.E., 2310 Oakton St., Evanston, to meet Snickers and speak to an adoption counselor. Adoption hours are Monday through Thursday, 6-8 p.m.; and …

Apollo & Zeus Await You At C.A.R.E.

Each week, we feature pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter.

Non-stop kisses: that's what you'll get with the dynamic duo of Apollo and Zeus, both of Italian Greyhound heritage. These boys can be very demanding, with a high need for your attention and quality lap time. That said, they’re a gentle pair, able to move about quietly with slender, racy builds. Need watch dogs? Apollo and Zeus, at your service. They're always ready to bark an alarm if they spot strangers or hear odd noises. Their ability to climb and jump can possibly get them into trouble due to their delicate legs. Apollo and Zeus don't let anything stop them. They're always ready for gentle games of fetch. Since they're sight hounds, they’re able to run like the wind—that means they’ll need secure fencing and proper leashes to keep …

Meet Rover, the Quintessential Dog

Each week, we feature pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter.

Big hearts, small packages. That describes Rover to a T. This wee Jack Russell mix may be shy at first, but once he gets to know you, his sunny personality will come leaping out. C.A.R.E. volunteers find Rover to be a "playful and affectionate boy who needs reassurance." They love how Rover "checks in to be sure everything is O.K." Rover loves meeting and greeting other small dogs at the shelter. For a small fellow, Rover is quite athletic with quick movements and mad high-jump skills. (Olympics, anyone?) To help build Rover's confidence, he'll need to attend Dog Obedience Group puppy class with you.  Rover's Stats: C.A.R.E. to Meet Rover? Please come to C.A.R.E., 2310 Oakton St., Evanston, to meet Rover and speak to an adoption counselor…

Checkers the Chihuahua Loves People

Each week, we feature cats and dogs available for adoption from the Community Animal Rescue Effort at the Evanston Animal Shelter.

Small dog, BIG personality. That describes CARE dog Checkers to a 'T.' This little chihuahua/cattle dog mix with his unforgettable harlequin face is a gentle soul who gets along with everyone.  C.A.R.E. volunteers have found Checkers to be reserved at first, but they love how quickly he warms up to and bonds with people. He's "affectionate without being clingy," as the vols describe him. Checkers' personality continues to emerge. He has a lively, inquisitive side that the right family could help shine through. If you're looking for a calm, attentive companion in a compact package, come check out Checkers. Checkers' Stats: C.A.R.E. to Meet Checkers? Please come to C.A.R.E. Evanston Animal Shelter, 2310 Oakton St., Evanston, to meet Checkers…

Meet Georgia the Dog: Ready To Play, Ready To Bond

Each week, we feature cats and dogs available for adoption from C.A.R.E. Evanston Animal Shelter.

Georgia is a happy-go-lucky girl with a pretty red coat and a super brain. She picks tricks up in a snap and always wants to learn more. (In fact, check out Georgia's starring role with C.A.R.E.'s Junior Volunteers in a YouTube clip called "Are You Smarter Than a Shelter Dog?") Playful and energetic, Georgia is also affectionate and loves to chill out with her people and a chew toy.  Georgia's ideal home would include dog-experienced adults or older kids who can help her channel her intelligence and enthusiasm. Because she's so intensely interested in everything, Georgia can sometimes get overstimulated and a little goofy. But once she has proper guidance and a calm leader, Georgia relaxes into a fun, rewarding companion who'll always put …

Meet Roxie: Ready To Rock Your World

Each week, we feature pets available for adoption from C.A.R.E. at Evanston's Animal Shelter. This week's post includes a gorgeous brindle-colored boxer mix named Roxie.

Roxie, a beautiful brindle-colored boxer mix (with a touch, some CARE volunteers think, of greyhound as well), has had a rough time of it recently. Her family had to give her up because their life got too busy. But they taught her how to love, right along with excellent manners, basic training and of course, housebreaking. Roxie loves everyone she meets and greets people with a happy wagging tail.  She has a gentle heart and approaches life with a light touch and polite manners. That said, life in the shelter is hard on her since she's such a social dog who would like nothing better than to hang around with people. Roxie already knows a lot of basic obedience. CARE volunteers are trying to keep her sharp by helping Roxie practice her …
