Proposed Safety Ordinance Would Expand Police Power Near ETHS

School and city officials recently discussed creating a safe school zone around Evanston Township High School.

Evanston police could have more authority around Evanston Township High School if school and city officials move forward with a proposed safety ordinance that would allow police to step in before a situation escalates to violence, the Daily Northwestern reported.  Under Illinois law, municipalities can create “safe school zones” near school areas, in which police can arrest individuals deemed a threat who refused to leave the zone after police request. The city and Evanston Township High School would work to determine the zone boundaries and District 202 Superintendent Eric Witherspoon says the proposed ordinance would target what he says are the two biggest threats to student safety: gang members and drug dealers, the Daily Northwestern…

Shirley, I think you have a good point. That is why we must include community members in this effort and why we cannot just leave it up to the police.   more ›

Surviving a Holiday Breakdown

When tasks at home and violence outside of it become just too much.

If your holiday season’s been filled with joy and relaxation, I sincerely congratulate you as I take yet another Advil while writing this column. But, if you’re anything like me, relieved to have survived the holidays (so far), settle in for a story you just might identify with. Please take me at my word when I say I’m eternally grateful for the blessings in my life … but there comes a time when the convergence of these blessings (and their various dynamics) drag me to my wits’ end. My mother has a saying that my sisters and I lovingly tease her about. Whenever things feel overwhelming, she’ll say, “It’s just too much.” I’m here to say, I’ve officially become my mother, because that’s how the holidays felt this year. I should have seen my …

Regional Police Report: Man Duct-Taped Couple In Art Heist, 22 Charged In Frat Hazing Death, and More

The following is a selection of police-related items reported in area Patches recently. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

Evanston Police: Man Duct-Taped Couple, Stole Paintings Stolen paintings found in a Morton Grove consignment shop led Evanston detectives to arrest and charge a Glenview man in connection with a home invasion that took place in Evanston in April 2012.  Michael Karabatsis, 51, of the 600 block of Pfingsten Road in Glenview, was arrested and charged with home invasion, a felony, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Police believe Karabatsis was one of three men who knocked on the door of a home in the 2200 block of Central Street on Friday, April 13, claiming they had a delivery. They forcibly entered the home by kicking the man, age 67, to the floor, then knocked his wife, also 67, to the floor, police said. After strapping the couple's hands with duct-…

Father, Son Struck By Car Crossing Ridge (Updated)

A father and his son were taken to the hospital with serious injuries after they were struck by a car Thursday morning, police said. Part of Ridge Avenue will be closed for roughly two hours.

A 39-year-old man is in critical condition while his 5-year-old son is stable after they were struck by a car on Ridge Avenue Thursday morning, according to police. Evanston fire paramedics transported the father and son to Evanston NorthShore University HealthSystem for treatment of serious injuries immediately after the crash, Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott said in a press release. The accident happened around 8:45 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, as the father and his son, both Evanston residents, were crossing Ridge Avenue at Grove Street on their way to Dewey Elementary School. Gun Buyback Follows 3 Fatal Shootings in 3 Months

Evanston held its first gun buyback Saturday, Dec. 15. The program was spearheaded by Carolyn Murray, whose 19-year-old son, Justin, was shot and killed Nov. 29.

Two weeks after her 19-year-old son, Justin, was shot and killed, Carolyn Murray stood at Christ Temple MB Church in Evanston, watching as dozens of people turned over rifles and handguns during the city’s first gun buyback program. In a tragic irony, Murray actually started trying to organize a gun buyback last summer, months before her son’s death. When 14-year-old Dajae Coleman was shot and killed in September, the city got behind her efforts, and a date was set: Dec. 15. In the three months between Coleman’s death and this Saturday’s gun buyback, there have been two more fatal shootings, including Justin’s death, and one shooting that left a 20-year-old Evanston man hospitalized in critical condition. Police say the most recent …

Police Have Suspects in Recent Shootings, But No Arrests

Evanston police do not have enough information yet to bring charges in two recent shootings, but they have identified suspects, according to a spokesperson for the department.

The suspects in two recent shootings remain at large while police gather enough information to bring charges, according to a spokesperson for the Evanston Police Department.  Justin Murray, 19, was shot and killed in the 1800 block of Brown Avenue on Thursday, Nov. 29, while a second Evanston man was shot and critically injured Saturday, Dec. 8, in what police believe may have been retaliation for Murray’s death.  “We don’t have anybody in custody for either shooting,” Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott said on Monday. But, he added, the police department has identified “people that we’re interested in for both shootings.”  For immediate updates on this story, like our Facebook page. While their investigation continues, police are not …
