Mayor Tisdahl: “It takes all of us to keep our children safe”

The Mayor’s Safe Summer Summit drew a large crowd of concerned Evanstonians looking to collaboratively address the city’s recent problematic trend of youth violence.

In many ways, the Mayor’s Safe Summer Summit was the City of Evanston officially saying to the local community: “We cannot tackle this problem of violence without your help.” The event, billed as a conference for “generating effective solutions to the increasing presence of neighborhood violence,” drew a crowd of over 100 community organizers, nonprofit representatives, city officials and concerned residents to the Levy Senior Center Saturday morning. Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl opened the event by impressing that only through a truly collaborative effort could the city stop a recent trend of violence and murders. “This is a community effort and we are taking this very seriously,” Tisdahl said. “All of our speakers have wonderful plans and …

Peace Vigil: Night of Prayer, Call for Action

Violence in Evanston brings religious, political and education leaders together at the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church to worship, sing and, seek solutions.

Standing before a warm, supportive crowd at the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Tyra Davis spoke briefly but passionately about the death of her brother in a recent shooting. Her brother, 23-year-old Evanston Marcus Davis of Evanston, was shot last month while in his car at Smitty's Garage. Reflecting on her loss, Davis said her mood recently changed from heartbroken to angry. "My brother lost his life for nothing, he didn't have a chance to run away or defend himself," Davis said, crying. "I will never be the same without my brother." Davis' testimony was one of many Monday evening, when people from Evanston joined together to discuss the recent violence in the city and call for solutions. The event, billed as a peace vigil to "…
