Don't hold back. Make YOUR opinion known.
The comments on my column last week (about teens and marijuana) reminded me just how many voices exist on any given topic, so today's column asks for your voice on how our city's doing. What's YOUR opinion? If that's too abstract, try answering any or all of these questions: 1. How would you describe Evanston in one word? 2a. What are Evanston's top three greatest challenges right now? 2b. Who's best suited to solve these challenges? 3. List Evanston's three greatest assets. 4. What does Evanston NEED and why? 5. What's your favorite restaurant and why? 6. Which public figure (political/celebrity) would you most hope to see visit and why? 7. How would you describe your life in Evanston in five sentences or less? 8. What scares you most …

The mother said she now has three girls and two boys. “Honestly, for me, I think it’s a normal thing. It was a regular day for me,” Chambers said. “We gave him the name Samson [which is] from the bible. The name means ‘being strong.’” Chambers added that she had family at the hospital …

The founder of Black Men Against Violence has some ideas to prevent future violent deaths in Evanston. “If we continue to allow this, black men will become extinct," says Tracey Wallace.
Tracey Wallace tells it like it is. “I’ll never run for office, because sometimes I get in trouble,” says the recent founder of Black Men Against Violence. “I don’t say what people want to hear. I say what’s on my mind.” Lately, Wallace has a lot on his mind that Evanston residents — and beyond — need to hear. I spoke to Wallace this weekend, when he told me how the shooting death of 19-year-old Justin Murray spurred him into action. “The shooting triggered something in me,” Wallace says. “I went from rage to fear.” Starting on Facebook, Wallace formed a group called Black Men Against Violence. He and others have held several meetings, and now he’s trying to put some of the group’s ideas into practice to end what he describes as a string …

The suspects would soon flee but were later apprehended in the 4500 block of Church Street. Imagine presenting the key to the City of Evanston to someone very special and very deserving. Who would you choose?
Last week, my nine-year-old son asked, “What does it mean when someone gets the keys to the city?” For whatever reason, a scene from The Wizard of Oz popped to mind -- the one in which the Mayor of Munchkinland presents Dorothy with a key to the city after dropping a house on the Wicked Witch of the West. Unfortunately, my memory was incorrect, because Dorothy never got the key (trust me, in the name of journalistic integrity, I watched this video three times). Despite numerous missed opportunities on the part of Munchkinland officials, they came up short (ha!), offering Dorothy 1) a regal welcome 2) a massive lollipop (which, conveniently, disappears) 3) the promise of a bust in the hall of fame made in her honor and 4) a used pair of …

A 16-year-old Skokie girl was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries after she crashed her car at Green Bay Road and McCormick Boulevard, according to police. No other cars were involved.
Evanston Police say a 16-year-old girl from Skokie was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after her car crashed into a barrier wall at Green Bay Road and McCormick Boulevard this morning. No one else was riding in her car, and there were no other vehicles involved in the crash, according to a press release from the police department. The crash took place around 11:15 a.m., police say. "There are indicators in the investigation that the driver was despondent at the time of the crash," Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott said in the release. Asked whether the crash might have been a suicide attempt, Parrott said that explanation "is being investigated as a clear possibility." Police shut down the intersection after the accident, …

The intersection at Dodge and Church is riddled with problems that will only get worse now that school is in session.
I have no doubt that managing a city like Evanston requires superhuman coordination and forethought. In the case of the intersection of Church and Dodge, however, I worry that someone accidentally approved the plans after a carb crash after lunch. As mentioned in a previous column, I spend a significant amount of time at that intersection taking my kids to Boocoo for music lessons and performances. Over the summer, while the intersection was under construction, I wondered when the metered spaces in front of Boocoo would return. Patience, I told myself. All in good time. When one of my sons was on crutches and needed help navigating in and out of the car with his bass guitar in the rain, I’d park in front of Boocoo with my hazards on, …
