The Best Advice You Got From Dad

In honor of Father's Day, we asked Patch readers for the best advice they've gotten from their father or a father-figure. Here's what you had to say.

Happy Father's Day, Patch readers! To mark the day, we asked you earlier this week to share the best advice you received from your dads. From the practical to the profound, here are some of the responses. Thanks to everyone for sharing. J.Lyn wrote: My dad shared this wisdom with me...and I have used it time and time again in my life. "Don't listen to what people say...watch what they do...that is where you will find the truth". Dan Pritzker's dad had a more specific recommendation: Never to trust the police. If it's harmleas and simple go ahead but anything else shut up and ask for an attorney or get one.  As did John Russillo's dad: Always double down on 11. Andrew Spatz shared this about his father, who passed away 20 years ago: Most of…

What's the Best Advice You've Gotten From Dad?

Dads tend to like dispensing wisdom. What's the best bit of advice your father shared?

What Does Dad Really Want for Father's Day?

Ideas that will make Dad smile on his special day

Mother’s Day is so much easier to plan than Father’s Day. I’m not just saying that because I'm a Mom and I think it’s incredibly easy to figure out what I like. After all, what woman doesn’t appreciate a pretty bouquet of flowers, an assortment of gourmet chocolate, a spa appointment or breakfast in bed? But when it comes to the men in our lives, it can be a lot trickier to plan that perfect day. There is no tradition around Father's Day like Mother's Day Brunch, which makes it easy to plan. Every Dad has different interests. I remember as a kid, whenever I would ask my Dad what he wanted for Father's Day his answer was always "Peace and Quiet." Well, you can't just pick that up at the store, so we had to be more creative.  So, how to …

What's the Best Advice You've Gotten From Dad?

Dads tend to like dispensing wisdom. What's the best bit of advice your father shared?

Did your dad show you how to correctly throw a football or teach you to make a killer soufflé? (My dad actually does make the soufflés in our family.) Or did he give you great advice on your wedding day or after your first child was born? Share the best morsels you’ve collected from dad over the years in the comment section below. We’ll compile the answers into a story for Father’s Day on Sunday. And there’s no need to limit this to dads with a capital D. If there was a father figure who gave you great advice — a coach, teacher, step-dad, etc. — let us know.

I was raised by a step-father who I dearly love and admire. When I was about 16 -17 years young, I was sneaking cigarettes. My step-father caught me smoking outdoors and instead of giving me grief and a long speech, he said..." a lady should never smoke in public." I know this sounds corny, but it always stuck with me, and before I stopped smoking, I would never smoke in public.   more ›

Dads Eat Free

If they're around, that is.

I’m not exactly sure how Father’s Day came to be, but it’s just around the corner.  For a few theories on the holiday from Answerbag.com, click here. Just like anything, there’s no such thing as a “perfect father”... though I know several who tie for the damn-near-perfect award. We’ve all seen examples of the best and worst dads, plus everything in between. What makes a good dad to one person doesn’t always resonate with everyone.  Being there, however, certainly does. According to Blast! Marketing and PR: Dad Eats Free at Koi and Chen’s PLUS Chance to Win $200 to The Home Depot Free Entree for Dad from Chinese Plate Menu Guests can celebrate Dad with the ultimate gift – a free meal.  Dad’s entree from the Chinese Plate menu will be …

I too am a child of divorce and was surprised to see an article recently that showed statistics regarding children of divorce having a much higher rate of divorce in their own lives. I, like John, have always felt that it was never going to be an option for myself precisely because of how it affected me when I was young. Anyway, I'm happy to say in my own life that most people I know are still …   more ›
