This Thursday's free, weekly concert series gets even better with the addition of five local food trucks, including Evanston's own Hummingbird Kitchen.
Looking for something to do on Thursday night? You won't want to miss out on this week's free concert series in Evanston, when five local food trucks join the music in Brummel Park. Evanston's own Hummingbird Kitchen, three trucks offering Mexican fare and a cupcake truck will pull up to the park starting at 5:30 p.m. Live music by R&B legend Andre Williams and the Gold Stars runs from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Williams is playing as part of the city's free Starlight Concert Series, a lineup of live music in parks around Evanston on Tuesdays and Thursdays through Aug. 21. The promise of four food trucks and live music drove Evanstonians and some Chicagoans to flock to Brummel Park on Evanston's south side for a relaxing evening.
Goodwin Chen would likely have never come to Evanston’s south side if it hadn’t been for the food trucks. He lives in Chicago’s Wicker Park neighborhood, works in downtown Evanston, and yet there he was, meeting friends and enjoying a few tacos at the Food Truck Fest & Live Music event held Thursday evening at Brummel Park near the intersection of Brummel Street and Elmwood Avenue. “It was delicious,” Chen said. “It felt pretty up to restaurant quality. If they stop by my building where I work, I’ll definitely come out and have my lunch there.” Ald. Evanston, the Hummingbird has landed. This morning marked the maiden voyage of the first licensed Evanston food truck, the Hummingbird Kitchen. After navigating their way through a number of Evanston City Council meetings, the trio behind Hummingbird finally won approval to prepare meals made to order on their truck. Tuesday, around 11:15 a.m., the truck rolled up to the northwest corner of Chicago and Clark, about 15 minutes in advance of its grand opening. As one of the three owners, Heather Behm, set out the menu sign and attempted to raise the truck's awning, passersby started to take notice. The Hummingbird Kitchen food truck isn't legally allowed to roll out onto Evanston streets just yet, but it made a brief appearance Tuesday on Chicago Avenue to hand food out for free during a taping of ABC's Hungry Hound. A handful of lucky Evanstonians, many of them employees at Union Pizzeria and friends of Hummingbird Kitchen Partner Heather Behm, ate free items including braised short rib tacos, eggplant sandwiches, and beet salad. "I'm blown away that kids like it," said Becca Noyes, who brought her young son to the event. "It's not kids food, but kids like it."
