What a Gas!
I’m fairly certain this hasn’t happened to anyone…but if it has, please share your experience: On Friday evening around rush hour, I stopped at Warren’s Shell Service at 1201 Chicago Avenue to fill up my tank. With my 8-year-old sitting in the car, I locked the nozzle to fill the tank automatically; I wanted to elicit a long overdue smile from him (he’s recovering from a broken collar bone). I knocked on his window and got a sad stare. Not surprising. Then, I pressed an imaginary elevator button and slowly bent my knees. From his perspective, it looked like I was heading down one floor. Our list of cheap gas stations will save you a few dollars at the pump.
Gas prices are up throughout the country, and in Evanston prices have reached a high of $4.44 per gallon. Ouch. Evanston Patch is all about keeping you informed, and we'd love to help you save an extra dollar or two when possible. With that in mind, we've compiled a list of the cheapest gas in Evanston. We created the list using the MapQuest cheap gas tool, which was built by our parent company, AOL. The bad news is that the lowest price listed is $4.22 per gallon, which isn't exactly cheap. As furnaces kick into gear in this cold weather, consumers will get a break on their heating bills. Natural gas rates for December have dipped to a low of 46 cents per therm, a price not seen since 2002, according to the Northern Illinois Gas Corp. That stands in contrast to the higher electricity rates consumers have seen this year. ComEd rates went up about 12 percent in the spring, and most of its customers saw the impact of that on their electric bills starting in June, said ComEd spokeswoman Alicia Zatkowski.
