Library Budget Talks Focus on Community Engagement, Public Perception

The Evanston Public Library Board of Trustees is only weeks away from passing its 2012 budget, but is still getting its priorities in order.

Wednesday night’s Evanston Public Library Board of Trustees meeting called to discuss the ins and outs of the 2012 library budget was less numbers talk and more a discussion of board members’ values and priorities concerning the future of the local library system. Later this month, the board will hold a second meeting to hammer out specifics and likely pass next year’s budget, but during Wednesday’s session, the five board members in attendance expressed their opinions regarding what they perceive to be the four most pressing and influential topics affecting the 2012 budget: the Main Branch, the North Branch, community engagement and services, and a possible change in the library’s tax levy resulting from the board adopting an autonomous …

Along with being a daytime shelter for the homeless, the Main Library serves those who are needing to do job searches and type resumes. So the library really is a multi-faceted operation. Once the die was cast with the closing of the south branch library the north branch was doomed. But what about the west branch library? I haven't heard mention of that yet. North Branch Library Discussed at EPL Board Meeting

The vote is still a month away, but residents used Wednesday night's library board meeting to champion the location as an economic engine for Central Street businesses.

In the lead up to next month’s vote over whether the Evanston Public Library Board of Trustees will continue to fund the North Branch through the end of 2011, several Evanstonians spoke in support of the neighborhood location at Wednesday night’s board meeting. Under the 2011 library budget passed in December, the North Branch will be funded through the end of August. At their May 18 meeting, the library board will vote whether to allocate the near $68,000 necessary to keep the branch running at current service level through the end of the year. Currently, there exists $46,832 in unallocated neighborhood services funding, which can be designated towards the branch location, though it would still leave a shortfall of near $22,000. Jim …
