Evanston Takes Sectional Track Crown

Glenbrook South, New Trier, Deerfield, Highland Park, Niles West, Maine West, Maine South, Notre Dame, Niles North and Loyola athletes will join Wildkits at State Meet.

Taking home the team trophy for the sixth straight year, the Evanston High School boys track team won the Niles West Sectional Thursday in Skokie sending five individuals and three relay teams to the State Meet May 24 and 25 at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston The Wildkits compiled 85 points. Glenbrook South took home second place with 72 followed by Prospect in third with 70 and New Trier fourth with 58. Niles West accumulated 47 for fifth with  Deerfield sixth, Main South seventh, Niles North eighth, Highland Park ninth place, Notre Dame of Niles tenth, Maine West 11th , Loyola Academy 12th, Maine East 13th\, Glenbrook North 14th and Von Steuben 15th. Olympic Gold Medalist Conor Dwyer Signs with Speedo USA

The North Shore native and Loyola Academy alum has signed a multi-year agreement with the company through 2016.

Olympic gold medalist Conor Dwyer has signed a multi-year agreement with Speedo USA through 2016, according to a press release.  “I am very excited to be a part of the Speedo family,” said Dwyer, who was born in Evanston and grew up in Winnetka.  “Speedo is the top name in swimwear and I appreciate the brand’s support as I embark on my professional swim career.”  The 24-year-old Loyola Academy alum joins teammates Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps on Team Speedo and has his sights set on the 15th FINA World Championships in Barcelona, Spain, where he hopes to represent USA in the freestyle and medley events and relays.  Dwyer won a gold medal as part of the U.S. 800-meter freestyle relay team swimming with Phelps, Lochte and Ricky Bernes …

Winnetka’s Conor Dwyer will be making his first Olympic appearance when he competes in men’s swimming at the London Olympics. The Loyola Academy graduate and Lake Forest Swim Club member will be competing in the 400 freestyle and will be part of the 800-relay team along with Charlie Houchin, Ryan Lochte, Matt McLean, Michael Phelps and Davis Tarwater. Dwyer will compete in the 400 freestyle preliminary heats Saturday at 10:50 a.m. London time or 4:50 a.m. Chicago team. The top eight swimmers from all the heats will move to the finals later Saturday at 7:49 p.m. in London or 1:49 p.m. here. Dwyer may also been seen as part of the 4x200 freestyle relay team. Olympics Bound: North Shore’s Conor Dwyer

The Loyola Academy graduate and Winnetka native placed 2nd in the 400-meter freestyle and 3rd in the 200-individual medley at the Olympic Trials in Omaha; he will represent the U.S. in London starting July 27.

North Shore native Conor Dwyer is headed to the Olympics, to represent the United States, and his hometown of Winnetka, in London later this month.  Dwyer, 23, a Loyola Academy graduate, took second place in the 400-meter freestyle event June 25 at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Omaha, Nebraska.  That placement qualified him for theU.S. Olympic Swim Team, along with 47 others who vied for the coveted honor. “It was unbelievable after the 400; it was a lot of emotion and it was hard for me to put it into words, I’ve put so much work in over the last 11 months,” Dwyer said. “It was breathtaking.” Dwyer also placed third in the 200-meter individual medley (IM) and fourth in the 200-meter freestyle events during the 10-day trials that ended July 2…

UPDATE: See Who Won Patch's Athlete of the Week

More than 400 votes were cast in last week's contest, see who won Athlete of the Week.

Loyola's Michelle Ricolcol is this week's Athlete of the Week.  Ricolcol led Loyola with 17 points in the Ramblers’ overtime loss to Barlett in the Class 4A state championship third-place game. It was the first time Loyola has gotten to the state semifinals since 1998. She garnered 328 votes, or 78 percent HONORABLE MENTION Lucas Nudelman, junior, boys track and field, Highland Park – Nudelman took first place in the 1600 in a dual meet against Glenbrook North and Northside Prep. The Highland Park junior was also highly involved with organizing the school’s 24-Hour Run, an annual charity event that has raised more than $100,000 in less than 10 years. Nominees for Athlete of the Week are Deerfield's Artie Bess, New Trier's Elana Benishay, Niles North's Mariyah Henley, Glenbrook North's Andrew McAuliffe and Loyola's Lauren Kriz.

More than 1,600 votes were cast in last week's competition and Deerfield's Christine Stitcher was named Patch Athlete of the Week.  The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 13 - Feb. 19: Artie Bess, senior, wrestling, Deerfield – Bess took third place in the 220-pound division at the Class 3A wrestling state championships last weekend. Bess beat Mt. Carmel junior David Denne 3-1 in the third-place match and finished the season with a record of 40-2. Lauren Kriz, senior, girl’s basketball, Loyola Academy – Kriz tallied 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Ramblers’ 46-31 win over Evanston in the Class 4A Evanston Regional finals. The Ramblers moved to 23-7 on the season and defeated Evanston for the second time this season. …

Almost 1,000 people voted last week to make Glenbrook South's Alli Mack our Athlete of the Week.  The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Nov. 14- Nov. 20 are: Brittany Collins, sophomore, basketball center, Maine West – The 6-foot center isn’t planning on having any sophomore slumps in her second varsity basketball season as she scored a game-high 20 points in Maine West’s season-opening 55-35 loss to Palatine on Nov. 14. The Warriors will host their Tip-Off Classic tournament later this week. Mimi Schneider, sophomore, girls swimming, Fenwick –Schneider racked up four victories at Saturday’s state championships, winning the 100-yard butterfly and swimming a leg in all three of Fenwick’s relay teams. Road Trip!

Destination: Skevanston

The other day in the car, my 8-year-old announced, “Someday this summer, could we take a trip?” I wondered if he had a particular place in mind.  Yosemite? The Grand Canyon?
