MLK Had a Dream; What's Yours?

Martin Luther King's famous 'I Have a Dream' speech inspired many to think about injustice and how they might help combat it. Patch wants to know what your dream is for a better world.

Fifty years ago, Martin Luther King delivered his rousing "I Have a Dream" speech to a crowd of 250,000 in front of the Lincoln Memorial after leading a peaceful demonstration in Washington, D.C. "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal,' King said on Aug. 28, 1963. "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.? The national holiday honoring civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. takes place Monday, Jan. 21, 2013. Here's a roundup of local events honoring his life in Evanston.

Monday, Jan. 21, is Martin Luther King Jr. Day. For some, the national holiday honoring the prominent civil rights activist is a time to give back and serve the community, be it through removing graffiti or picking up litter in a local park. For others, it’s an opportunity to educate themselves about King and his life's work. And for others, it’s a time to just kick back and enjoy the prolonged weekend. Evanston Youth Perform In Honor of MLK

Y.O.U. members came together on Jan. 17 to perform their annual Diverse Evanston Walks United.

At the Music Institute of Chicago, Y.O.U. members performed musical numbers celebrating Martin Luther King’s efforts to put an end to violence.  The “Diverse Evanston Walk United” focused on how the Evanston community can come together to put an end to the violence specifically in this city.  Evanston’s Y.O.U. sponsored its fifth annual performance.  Y.O.U. is an organization that seeks to help disadvantaged youth by providing them with services that help them create a positive identity, according to their website. Evanston Residents March For Peace

On Jan. 17, people marched across the city of Evanston to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr.

The snow, wind, and freezing rain didn’t stop Evanston residents from marching for peace Monday morning.  People of all ages walked from the First Methodist Church of Evanston to the Music Institute of Chicago in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.  Michael James, who led the walk, thinks it’s very important for Evanston to come together on this special day. “I watched Martin Luther King Jr. speak when I was a little boy,” he said.  “I knew I needed to do something to keep his memory and message alive.” At the end of the first part of the march, participants congregated shortly at the Nichols Concert Hall for a musical performance sponsored by Y.O.U. Unity on Display, Volunteer Website Launched at MLK Day Event

Evanston residents gathered Monday morning to kick off the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Pledge Day.

More than 47 years after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his famous “I Have a Dream Speech” from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Evanston residents of differing race, religion, background and age assembled in a call to action and display of unity to honor his memory. Near 100 citizens and community leaders gathered at the First United Methodist Church of Evanston Monday morning to kick off the 2011 Martin Luther King, Jr. Peace Pledge Day with the Community Coffee and Service Fair. The day’s events were organized by A Community of One, a partnership between several Evanston religious institutions, which joined forces a year ago to promote harmony, discussion and social responsibility within the Evanston community. …
