Schakowsky Wins 9th Congressional District Democratic Primary

With a commanding lead over her challenger, the congresswoman, who was in Washington, D.C., thanked her supporters.

Update: 11:06 p.m. Defeated candidate Simon Rebeiro conceded, but remained proud of his effort. “Of course, I would have loved to win," Rebeiro said, "but I was realistic, so honestly I’m happy to get 4,000 plus votes. That’s a lot, especially with the turnout being so low and especially with the overwhelming establishment support for my opponent and the power and the war chest that she has. So in spite of all of that, I think it’s great that I could make as big of a dent as I did.” When asked if he would lend his support to Schakowsky now that he had lost the primary election, Rebeiro said that he would give her an opportunity to earn his support, but that her already disagreed with her trackrecord. "From now until November, there’s six …

Opinion: Lawyer, Fellow 'Rink Rat' Supports Steve Demitro's Judicial Campaign

In a Letter to the Editor, William J. Martin, a former Cook County assistant state's attorney, lends his support to a candidate for Cook County Circuit Court judge.

Ridgeland Common Ice Rink. Rat Time. 1982. Blades crunching the hard ice, legs moving like pistons, the kid tore along the side boards until his black-taped stick blade picked up the puck.  He whirled dervish-like without losing a stride and gave a demonstration of dipsy-doodle stickhandling up the ice. None of the players could get near him and when he skated inside the blue line, he let rip with an ear-cracking slapshot, his stick smacking the puck like a fired M-15.  Before the goalie knew that the puck left the kid’s stick, it slammed into the netting behind him, bulging the twine in the top shelf next to the peanut butter. I had been hanging around rinks for over 30 years, a consummate rink rat and for a good part of that time my …

What Do You Think of the D65 School Building Referendum?

Raising money to build a new school is one of three referendum questions on the March 20 ballot.

Evanston has three referendum questions on its March 20 ballot — one on the township dissolution, one on funding for a new school building, and one on electrical aggregation. Those first two questions seem to have touched a nerve with residents, so we wanted to start a dialogue on the site for those who feel passionately about the issues and those who are still undecided. Today we're exploring the school building question. Please vote in our poll below and then share your thoughts in the comment section. Yesterday we addressed the township dissolution question. John, Let me improve your analogy and still if you're still in agreement. Your brother gets a new bike and sadly, it's not in the budget for you to as well. However your brother also gets a new scooter (Willard additions), skateboard (Dewey additions) and moped (the $10 million addition at Lincoln when the extra kids could have been redistricted to Oakton FOR FREE) and you're still settling for …   more ›

School Board Member Offers Info on Building Referendum

This is one of the four points of view columnist Christine Wolf gathered to help form her own opinion before the March 20 vote.

I’m trying to wrap my head around the Better Schools Initiative referendum proposed by District 65 — but it hasn’t been easy. Since I haven’t yet formed my own opinion, I’m sharing a few opinions I’ve collected from various community members. These opinions are by no means all encompassing. They’re just to get the conversation going so Evanston residents can decide for themselves how they’ll vote on March 20. Below are facts to consider from school board member Eileen Budde that she wrote in an email that was forwarded to me. Click on these links to read the other three opinions: From an email Budde wrote that was forwarded to me: Sent: Tue, March 6, 2012 Subject: district 65 info Hello, You are receiving this e-mail because you've e-…
