Knitting Group Donates Year's Work to Evanston Families

The Infant Welfare Society of Evanston's “Adopt-a-Family” program received over 160 pieces of hand-knitted garb.

On Christmas morning, families in need across Evanston opened presents of hand-knit clothing, all thanks to a small group of dedicated knitters at a Wilmette retirement community. For the holidays, members of the knitting group at the Mather Place of Wilmette donated over 160 pieces of hand-knit, cold-weather gear to the Infant Welfare Society of Evanston, a local nonprofit offering family support services. The goods were used to supplement the nonprofit’s “Adopt-a-Family” program, in which one Evanston family assists with the specific needs of another Evanston family, whether that entails buying food, clothing, furniture or individualized Christmas presents. “Mather contacted me, saying, ‘We have all of these knitted hats and scarves that…

Snapshot: A Salute to Our Local Veterans

From WW II to the Vietnam War, more than 20 veterans were honored at the Mather Lifeways community center on Friday.

Local veterans who live at Mather Lifeways in Evanston were honored Friday with an afternoon ceremony commemorating Veterans Day. Several dozen residents, visitors and employees gathered in a large room to sing songs and view pictures from their time spent in the service. All in all, 27 veterans were honored at the event. During the ceremony guests sang several patriotic songs and saw a slideshow of photos from their times in the military. Rick Davis, a volunteer in the educational outreach program of the National Veterans Art Museum, spoke during the commemoration. Davis spoke of the memory of one soldier in particular, Lt. Col.
