Hoping to sleep in, our columnist wakes to a well-meaning bowl of Cheerios from her son at 6:30 AM--and it turns out he used up all the milk.
If you’re a mother, I hope you had a chance to enjoy a wonderful Mother’s Day yesterday. I had a beautiful day with my family, although it got off to an earlier-than-usual start: While my husband was in the shower at 6:30 a.m., I was greeted (a.k.a. woken up) by our 9-year-old son. “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom,” he announced, handing me a plastic tray carrying a bowl of Honey Nut Cheerios, a banana and a lovely card. I read the note with one eye open, hoping I’d be able to put the tray on the bedside table and enjoy the breakfast after another hour of sleep. However, his expression begged me to eat it in front of him. Oh, how could I not? He’d even remembered to bring a spoon and a napkin. I ate the entire bowl of cereal (and it wasn’t a …

A Mother's Day reminder of the joys of motherhood
Mother's Day is this Sunday, just in case you were too busy being a Mother to notice. It got me thinking about how sometimes I'm so busy, tired, and stressed that I don't stop to appreciate why being a Mom is worth it. Some days it's easier to focus on the negatives and I ask myself why did I go through all of the pain, nausea, sleepless nights, insecurity, and the extra 10 pounds that won’t go away? So, I wrote a post on Why Being a Mom is Worth It that I wanted to share. But more importantly, I'd love to hear from you. Why Do You Love Being a Mom? Please comment below and let's create a great list of why Motherhood is amazing. The reminder is a nice gift to ourselves. I want to wish everyone a Happy Mother’s Day. I hope your day is …

What do Moms really want for Mother's Day?
Mother's Day is coming up and I hope your family goes all out and makes your special day memorable. But, stop for a minute and think about what would make that day special. What could your family do to make you feel like the best Mom in the world? If we don't tell our family what we want, we run the risk of being disappointed, right? And, based on a lot of the comments I've seen on parenting sites and Mom blogs, there's a lot of disappointment out there. So, Moms, what do you really want for Mother's Day? Do you have traditions that you look forward to every year? Last year, Kathy O., a Patch.com reader shared "I usually work on Mother's Day, so we start off with early Mass followed by breakfast with my mom. We also try and visit the …

Evanston's bountiful supply.
After a wonderful Mother’s Day with my family, I sat on the couch, trolling the Interwebs, searching for inspiration for today’s About Town column. I went to YouTube and searched Evanston. The first video I clicked on was a little trippy…some aerial shots of Evanston with animated flying vehicles. “Whoa,” I said as I watched. From across the room, my husband asked, “What are you watching?” “A funky aerial video on Evanston,” I said. “Why?” “For a second there, it sounded like you were watching porn.” I didn’t offer a response. Instead, I just rolled my eyes and prayed our 8-year-old didn’t overhear the term; I wasn’t quite in the mood to provide a definition. A new YouTube search brought me to a video of a shipwreck in Evanston. The …
