Columnist Christine Wolf listens to others' opinions about living in Evanston -- then offers her own.
Two days ago, I sat with my laptop in Panera, taking in all the bustle of a Saturday morning in Evanston. Northwestern students crept in, bleary, stressed out and in search of coffee and bagels. Older women sat together, drinking coffee and smiling at the young moms trying to corral their toddlers. A businessman in his 30's talked loudly on his cell phone with a colleague in Chicago. "I'm telling you," he said, unaware of how booming his voice was, "you've gotta move to Evanston. Seriously, it's where it's at." I was intrigued. He'd just been talking about P&L's and LLC's and stock offerings -- things I've never understood and never will. I do, however, speak Evanston, so I couldn't help writing down what he was saying. Just call me creepy…

Don't hold back. Make YOUR opinion known.
The comments on my column last week (about teens and marijuana) reminded me just how many voices exist on any given topic, so today's column asks for your voice on how our city's doing. What's YOUR opinion? If that's too abstract, try answering any or all of these questions: 1. How would you describe Evanston in one word? 2a. What are Evanston's top three greatest challenges right now? 2b. Who's best suited to solve these challenges? 3. List Evanston's three greatest assets. 4. What does Evanston NEED and why? 5. What's your favorite restaurant and why? 6. Which public figure (political/celebrity) would you most hope to see visit and why? 7. How would you describe your life in Evanston in five sentences or less? 8. What scares you most …

Patch opinion columnist Christine Wolf asks readers for their opinion this time around. So please step up and share your thoughts on what local issues you want to see covered. We're all ears!
The greatest aspect of having an opinion column in Evanston is never running out of material. In the fifteen years I've lived here, I've gotten to know educators, artists, musicians, politicians, scholars, retauranteurs, entrepreneurs, activists, actors, and athletes. I've met people finding their way and forging new paths, and I'm never at a loss to find a new friend in this town. I've been introduced to inspiring kids (and some I'd like to throttle). One of my biggest regrets about living in Evanston in not having enough time in the day to take advantage of every festival, gallery opening, and business in town. Not a bad problem to have. Still, I'd like to hear from YOU. While it's easy for me to write a column about my take on things, I…

No matter how long we've been here, we all have opinions of Evanston.
If someone stopped you as you were taking out the trash and asked how you like your neighborhood, what would you say? Let me rephrase that. That sounds a little suspicious. Creepy, even. What would you say to someone who stops you in broad daylight, as you're about to enter your house and says, "Excuse me. I hate to impose, but I'm considering moving into that house/condo/dorm/coach house/sorority/fraternity/apartment across the street. Do you mind if I ask how you like living here?" I was recently asked how I like my neighborhood by someone considering a home on my street, so I sat down and answered her questions. Knowing how many resources are available to people these days on the internet, I figured she'd be able to dig up the …
