More Northwestern Construction Going Before Preservation Commission

Shortly after the preservation commission voted down a parking garage on Northwestern’s south campus, the university is seeking approval for an even bigger garage on north campus.

Another major Northwestern University construction project will soon go before the preservation commission for approval, not long after the city committee voted down a parking garage on the university’s south campus.  Northwestern is planning to construct a new, $40 million parking garage on its north campus that will provide 1,125 spots as well as new weight and fitness rooms and space for some academic programs, according to a press release from the university. The proposed building will be connected to the Henry Crown Sports Pavilion/Norris Aquatics Center at 2311 Campus Dr. “The new facility will provide significantly expanded and improved space for fitness, wellness and other programs for use by the entire Northwestern community,” …

Council Green-Lights Northwestern Visitor Center/Parking Garage

Despite opposition from several residents to a seven-story building proposed for the south end of campus, Evanston aldermen approved an agreement with Northwestern by a 6-1 vote.

Evanston aldermen attempted to broker a truce Tuesday between Northwestern University and a group of residents who oppose the university’s proposal to build a $32 million, seven-story visitor center and parking garage at the south end of campus. Aldermen voted 6-1 at Tuesday’s city council meeting to approve an agreement with Northwestern allowing the university build a fire lane and bike path for the proposed building on a strip of public, lakefront property just north of Clark Street Beach.  Under the original agreement, the city would lease the strip of land to Northwestern for $1 a year over 75 years. However, Ald. Jane Grover (7th ward) proposed a new, amended agreement without a formal lease, in which Northwestern would shoulder not …

Council May Vote On Northwestern Visitor Center Monday

Monday’s agenda includes a vote on a lease agreement between the city and Northwestern that would allow construction of an 81-foot visitor center that’s drawn significant opposition.

Evanston aldermen could vote Monday on a lease agreement that would allow construction of a controversial new visitor center and parking garage at the southern tip of the Northwestern University campus.  Planned for 1841 Sheridan Road, the proposed building is 81 feet at its highest point and would contain a visitor center with auditorium, offices and reception area as well as a seven-story, 435-car parking garage, according to city documents. If the city council approves an ordinance scheduled on Monday night’s agenda, Northwestern University will be able to enter into 75-year lease with the city for $1 a year in order to build a fire lane and public bike path on city land east of the building. Two weeks ago, city council members gave …

I am not an environmentalist advocate, but the removal of 275 trees near the lakefront, which this project requires and is stated in the City's analysis, is very disappointing. Yes, NU will pay to re-plant the trees elsewhere, but losing the unobstructed lake front view and the environmental benefits of trees is a steep price to gain a better bike path. Also, visitor centers are a nice to have. …   more ›
