Raising a Third Child: When Ketchup Counts as a Vegetable

A son's annual check-up gets his mother wondering what happens between raising the first child and the last.

The other day, my son kicked me out of his doctor’s appointment. Somewhere around the age of acne explosions, smelly feet and hair product, pediatric annual check-ups include an option for a parent-free zone to promote a personal discussion with a health care professional. This is a great idea, and I think adolescents should take full advantage of this opportunity. Correction: this is a great idea, and I think other people’s kids should take full advantage of it. My kids? They have nothing to hide. As a seasoned parent when it comes to these "special" visits, I was well prepared. This was my third child, after all. I like to think of myself as a fairly liberal, tolerant and accepting person, who prides herself in keeping communication …

GREAT post, Betsy. I, too, have 3 children, and only the first has a baby book (the youngest child is now 9...). It's mayhem and humility all rolled up together, isn't it? I'm guessing you're like me -- wouldn't have it any other way. Cheers.   more ›

Pizza Expert Dishes Out Super Bowl Dining Advice

Use Evanston Patch's directory to help you pick the perfect pie.

Super Bowl Sunday may not actually be the biggest day of the year for pizza sales, but it's always in the top five, says Jeremy White, the editor-in-chief of Pizza Today magazine. “Halloween, the day before Thanksgiving and Super Bowl Sunday are all big days for pizza,” White said. “It varies from year to year, with New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day rounding out the top five days." At any rate, White is certainly a big advocate of ordering a few pies to enhance your Super Bowl viewing enjoyment. “You definitely want to have pizza and a few good drinks on hand to avoid any letdown in game,” White joked. Another Evanston Bankruptcy: Giordano's

The Chicago-based pizza chain filed for Chapter 11 protection.

Days after Borders filed for bankruptcy and announced it would be closing its Evanston store, another chain with an Evanston location has filed for bankruptcy protection. Giordano's, a Chicago-based pizza company with a restaurant on Davis Street, sought Chapter 11 protection, saying in court papers it had “an urgent and immediate need for cash to continue to operate.” According to the Wall Street Journal, Giordano's "owes more than $45 million to lender Fifth Third Bank." "The company won approval Thursday to use a portion of its $36 million bankruptcy loan so it can keep its doors open and pay its vendors and its employees during its bankruptcy case." The Evanston location will remain open.
