Well, Sandra, you might get your wish to see some drive-bys on the North Shore. There were armed robberies in Deerfield and Wilmette in the last couple of weeks. Of course, those are anti-gun Lib towns so criminals know those are easy marks.   more ›

Kirk Climbs 237 Steps Returning to Senate

Highland Park senator comes back to work just under a year after suffering a stroke.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park) returned to work today as he climbed 237 steps to the entrance of the Senate side of the United States Capitol just under a year after suffering a major stroke. Assisted by Vice President Joe Biden and Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Kirk walked slowly using a cane completing the ascent 10 minutes before the Vice President was scheduled to gavel the Senate into session for the 113th Congress. Biden was not worried about the timing. “You’ve got all day, pal,” the vice president said to Kirk at the bottom of the stairs. Biden was the first person to greet Kirk when he appeared at the bottom of the steps, giving him a hug. Next to hug his returning colleague at the bottom of the stairs was Sen. Richard Durbin (D-…

To IMHO...would you have pushed for Franklin Roosevelt to resign? He smoked, drank martinis (sometimes it is said with his misstresses) and had servants spend hours dressing him everyday. His "service" to America included running for president even when he knewhe was deathly ill. Did IMHO carry on about why STroger didn't resign until the politics was arranged to protect his kid?   more ›

Schakowsky Rips Cantor, Dold

As Cantor campaigns with Dold today, Schakowsky questions North Shore Congressman’s moderate claims.

A visit by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) today to boost the campaign of Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) prompted Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) to question Dold’s stance as a moderate Republican. Dold is running for reelection against Democratic candidate Brad Schneider of Deerfield. The Republican running against Schakowsky is Tim Wolfe of Arlington Heights. Earlier: Kirk, Schakowsky, Dold Talk Debt Ceiling Compromise Cantor will headline a fundraiser for Dold today at a private Highland Park home and take some time with the North Shore Congressman at his Highland Park campaign office to join a phone bank sponsored by the Republican Jewish Coalition.  “Eric Cantor is really the ideological leader of the Tea Party group (in …

The Congressional Budget Office's just-released economic forecast for 2013 is dispiriting, to say the least. The GDP is expected to grow by only 1.4%, the unemployment rate will "stay near" 8%, the deficit will reach $845 billion, and ObamaCare will cost 7 million their health insurance.   more ›

Update: Schakowsky Blasts Health Care Vote

Congresswoman likes the law as it is while Dold thinks change is necessary.

(Update, 6:40 p.m.) Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) criticized what she called the 33rd effort of the House Republican majority to repeal all or part of the Affordable Care Act after today’s vote to eliminate the law. She thinks the time should be devoted to job creation. “Though Republicans took control of the House with the promise that they will focus on jobs, they have wasted more than 43 hours of floor time on legislation to repeal Obamacare,” Schakowsky said. Schakowsky likes the health care law as it is. She praises how it has already helped millions of Americans by eliminating caps on their insurance, allowing children under 16 to remain on their parents’ policies and insuring care for youngsters with pre-existing conditions. “I …

Poll Results: Give Health Care Law a Chance

A majority of Patch readers responding to an unscientific poll want to give the Affordable Care Act a chance to work.

Give the Affordable Care Act (ACA) a chance. That was the opinion of a majority of readers who responded to an unscientific Patch poll asking whether President Barack Obama’s health care legislation should be given time to season, be repealed or changed. Earlier: What Should Be Done With Obamacare? Of the 637 people who took the poll, 370 want to leave the new law recently upheld by the United States Supreme Court alone to see how it works, 198 want it repealed and 69 want to repeal objectionable parts and keep the rest. Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth), who voted just over a year ago for repeal, wants to change parts of the law keeping provisions like letting children under 26 remain on their parents’ coverage and prohibiting insurance …

Photo Gallery: Politicians Parade on July 4th

Incumbents, challengers and open-seat aspirants greet the crowds on the Fourth of July.

Along with marching bands, floats and civic organizations, elected officials and those who aspire to be public servants flock to participate on Fourth of July parades throughout the area. Deerfield’s parade was no exception. Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) walked with a large group of supporters a number of spaces behind his challenger for the 10th District Seat, Brad Schneider of Deerfield. Dold needed a spot toward the end of Deerfield’s noontime event because he was coming from Glenview, which started its parade at 11:30 a.m., before heading to Northbrook, as did Schneider, at 2 p.m. In addition to Deerfield and Northbrook, Schneider and Dold crossed paths in Vernon Hills. Update: Dold, Kirk Want Changes to Affordable Care Act, Schakowsky Praises Decision

Local politicians reacted Thursday to the Supreme Court's 5–4 decision to uphold President Obama's Affordable Care Act.

(Update at 2:15 p.m.) Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) wants to make change to some parts of the Affordable Care Act and retain other provisions in the wake of today’s United States Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision to uphold the law. “We need to put in place provisions we’ve talked about and repeal some of the others,” Dold said today. “I consider the doctor-patient relationship sacrosanct and nothing should come in between that.” Among other things, Dold wants to get rid of the Independent Patient Advisory Board, a 15-member panel created by the Affordable Care Act charged with finding Medicare savings. Dold wants to retain the provisions allowing people under 26 to remain on their parents’ coverage and those that prohibit an insurer from …

Schakowsky, Dold Help Defeat Pro-Life Bill

North Shore representatives vote against bill that would criminalize abortion based on gender.

A proposed federal law criminalizing abortions performed solely because of the gender of the fetus was defeated Thursday as Rep. Robert Dold, R-Kenilworth, joined six other Republicans in voting against the measure. Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Evanston, voted against the bill as well, joining 160 of her Democratic colleagues to defeat the proposed legislation on procedural grounds. Earlier: Dold Schakowsky Spar on Women’s Health The final vote was 246-168 in favor of the bill, which required a two-thirds majority because its sponsors were trying to rush it through and needed a suspension of the rules to do so, according to Dold communications director Stefani Zimmerman. Dold, Schakowsky Spar on Women's Health

Evanston Congresswoman calls Dold’s recent proposal on women’s health a political ploy. He accuses her of partisanship.

(Updated on Oct. 27 at 5 a.m.) Editor’s Note—When the original article below was written, Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) was commenting on Rep. Robert Dold’s (R-Kenilworth) legislation to protect women’s health which is supported by Planned Parenthood. It prevents discrimination against health care providers who try to limit measures available to women. Though Dold’s Democratic challenger, Brad Schneider of Deerfield, was present when Schakowsky made her statements, Patch did not report what he had to say. Schneider says he is strongly favors a woman’s right to choose. “I am 100 percent pro-choice,” Schneider said in a debate on Fox News Oct. 21. “I believe the woman should have the choice on her body, we need to have her in control of …

Schakowsky Rallies Democrats for Schneider

Primary opponents offer support at unity rally.

Brad Schneider stood with Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-Evanston) and his three opponents for the Democratic nomination for the 10th Congressional District seat Thursday in Lincolnshire in a show of unity after winning Tuesday’s primary. Schakowsky and Schneider rallied more than 250 people at a Tenth Congressional District Democrats unity event to put aside their differences after a spirited primary and focus their energy on unseating Rep. Robert Dold (R-Kenilworth) as Ilya Sheyman, John Tree and Vivek Bavda pledged their support. Schneider began his general election campaign Wednesday morning at the Highland Park train station and Dold wasted little time responding to the Deerfield management consultant’s criticism.
