NRA Calls for 'Armed Security' Around Schools

"The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the NRA's Wayne LaPierre said.

In an amazing Friday morning press conference, the National Rifle Association broke its weeklong silence following the horrific shooting of 26 people at a school in Newtown, CT and called for a surge of gun-carrying "good guys" around American schools. NRA Executive Vice President Wayne LaPierre called for a new kind of American domestic security revolving around armed civilians, arguing that "the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun." ETHS Safety Director: Safety is our Top Priority

ETHS Director Sam Pettineo sent a message to parents in the wake of two arrests over iPhone robberies.

Shortly after two Evanston Township High School students were arrested for violently stealing iPhones from other students in the halls of the school, ETHS Director of Safety Sam Pettineo sent a message to parents and guardians to say that such acts of violence in the school are rare. Here is the full text of the letter:   Dear Parent/Guardian: Each school day, the halls of Evanston Township High …

Interview: ETHS' New Director of Safety

Evanston Patch meets with Sam Pettineo to ask tough questions about gangs in Evanston Township High School, security technology, cyber-bullying and more.

On Oct. 14, Sam Pettineo replaced Terrence Doby as Evanston Township High School's new director of safety. To accept the job, Pettineo left his positions as lead trainer and consultant for the Institute for Public Safety Partnerships as the University of Illinois at Chicago, and as an instructor at the Center for Public Safety at Northwestern University. Pettineo is no stranger to the community. He is a 32-year veteran of the Evanston Police Department, much of that time spent as ETHS's school resource officer or developing new community policing strategies. Evanston Patch sat down with the new director of safety to discuss gangs in the high school, security technology, cyber-bullying and more. Evanston Patch:  What are your biggest …
