Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl is among hundreds nationwide who signed a letter asking President Barack Obama to increase gun control after the shooting in Newtown, CT, on Dec. 14.
Following the tragic shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, CT, Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl was among hundreds of mayors in the U.S. who signed a letter to President Obama calling for greater gun control. Dated Dec. 19, the letter urged Obama to “make it harder for dangerous people to possess guns, and easier for police and prosecutors to crack down on them.” “As mayors, we are charged with keeping our communities safe,” the letter read. “But too many of us have sat with mothers and fathers of children killed with guns. Twenty-four children enrolled in public schools in your hometown of Chicago were shot to death just last year.” In Evanston, three people were shot and killed by guns within the last three months, while another…

A group of Evanston residents rallied for peace after Justin Murray, 19, was shot and killed Nov. 29. Two more shootings since have only increased the urgency of the new group's mission.
Two days after 19-year-old Justin Murray was shot and killed in Evanston on Nov. 29, a small group gathered in front of Boocoo, holding signs that read “Stop the Violence” and “Peace Now, Peace Always.” That small rally was a first step toward what the group hopes is a larger movement. Immediately following the gathering at Boocoo, Evanston residents Justin Blake, Mandy Eason and Kimberly Frazier decided to start a group dedicated to promoting nonviolence, hoping to carry the momentum of that gathering forward. Called Peace Pioneers for Evanston, the group’s stated goal is to unite the community, empower young people, support existing programs and create more programs and activities for teens and young adults. Evanston police believe the shooting of Robert Gresham in 2005 at the Keg may have launched a violent and deadly give-and-take between members of two extended families with gang ties.
As the Evanston community reels from two homicides and one serious shooting in less than two weeks, police say the recent violence may all stem back to a murder that took place in Evanston in 2005, and the resulting ongoing feud between certain members of two local families. In that incident, police say 19-year-old Antoine Hill shot and killed 22-year-old Robert Gresham at the Keg, 810 Grove Street. A judge sentenced Hill to 18 years in prison on charges of first-degree murder in October 2006; he was released on parole this September. “Police believe that may have been the start of the violent back-and-forth issues between these two factions,” said Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott, a spokesperson for the Evanston Police Department. According …
