Evanston Police Expanding Stop-and-Frisk in Response to Shootings

Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington says the new policy doesn’t mean that “every 15- to 50-year-old African American male will get patted down,” Evanston Now reported.

In light of the recent wave of shooting incidents, Evanston police will expand stop-and-frisk activities, Evanston Police Chief Richard Eddington told residents at a 5th Ward meeting on May 16, Evanston Now reported.  Recent shooting incidents included a May 7 shooting near the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center; an April 24 incident where a 23-year-old man fired several rounds from a semi-automatic gun at a car with multiple passengers; and an April 14 incident where two people exchanged gunfire near Emerson Street and Hartrey Avenue in what may have been a gang-related incident, according to police.  Eddington told the crowd of 120 people that he has worked hard to avoid widespread use of stop-and-frisk but the only way police can …

ETHS 'Moment of Silence' Ignites Emotional Debate On Violence

ETHS students were asked to observe a moment of silence following former student Blake Ross's death, prompting criticism from some Patch readers. Patch opinion columnist Christine Wolf reacts.

In the early morning hours of Mother’s Day, Blake Ross, 20, was shot and killed on the south side of Chicago. Ross was a former student at Evanston Township High School. The following day, a PA announcement informed students at ETHS of Ross’ death. A moment of silence was called for, and grief counseling services were offered. Patch posted a story about his death and the moment of silence--and then the comments started flying. For more community conversation and Evanston news, like Patch on Facebook. “Why was ETHS involved at all? The [guy] was a gang banger and the school has no obligation to glorify him. As a past graduate, current resident, I could care less that he got shot. Let Chicago deal with it. The Board of Ed should reprimand …

To clarify - I brought up Sandy Hook - once. Most every mass killing is done by a white male...and Sandy Hook is still brought up in the news daily. Festus, I am giving up after this and have tried to give you the benefit of the doubt but you are ignorant. There are tons of bad kids who come from great parents -- parents who've busted their butts. Parents whether you like it or not are not the …   more ›

Ian, (1) why would Carolyn bond a shooter out who is responsible for her distant cousin Javar's murder? That is nonsensical. And (2) Justin did not have a criminal record. He may not have been a saint but he was not in the same league as Blake. He moved out of state to get AWAY from trouble. Unfortunately, coming home was a mistake. Sad! I found a pic of Blake holding a firearm on his Facebook …   more ›

CeaseFire To Host Violence Prevention Forum in Evanston

Tio Hardiman is director of Cure Violence Illinois (formerly CeaseFire), a national group that seeks to end violence by treating it like an infectious disease. He hosts a Violence Prevention Community Forum in Evanston March 28.

Tio Hardiman of Cure Violence (formerly CeaseFire), a national group dedicated to ending violence, will address Evanston residents during a community forum this March. Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl hosts the event, titled a "Violence Prevention Community Forum," from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, 1655 Foster Street. The event is free and open to the public; no registration is required. Cure Violence was founded in 2000 by Gary Slutkin, a Chicago doctor who treated infectious diseases and believed the same approach could be taken to violence prevention. The group was made famous by the PBS film The Interrupters, which documented its method of training people (often former gang members) to …

Evanston Mom of Fatally Shot Teen Is State of the Union Guest

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky announced that Evanston resident Carolyn Murray will be her guest of honor at President Obama’s State of the Union Address Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2013. Murray’s son was fatally shot in November.

U.S. Rep. Jan Schakowsky announced Friday that Evanston resident Carolyn Murray—whose 19-year-old son, Justin, was fatally shot in November—will be her guest of honor at President Obama’s State of the Union Address next week. Schakowsky is one of several House Democrats who have pledged to bring guests affected by gun violence to the address on Tuesday, Feb. 12, as a way of advocating for gun safety measures.    “I’m very excited to join Congresswoman Schakowsky at the State of the Union Address in honor of my son, Justin,” Murray said in a press release. “Too many young people have been killed by guns, and it must end. As the mother of a young victim, I’m committed to doing everything in my power to end gun violence. The time is now for …

Mayor Urges Support of Assault Weapons Ban

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl issued a press release today outlining her support of a proposed assault weapons ban and calling for residents to join her.

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl issued a press release Thursday calling for residents to support a nationwide assault weapons ban.  Tisdahl said she “wholeheartedly” supported the proposed Assault Weapons Ban of 2013, a bill that U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein introduced in Congress Thursday. If passed, the bill would stop the sale, transfer, importation and manufacture of military-style assault weapons.  “We have too many guns in our communities and we must work together to get them off the streets,” Tisdahl wrote in the press release. “As a mayor, I am bestowed with the duty to keep my community safe and these common sense solutions will help go a long way in fulfilling that solemn responsibility.” In her press release, Tisdahl urged …

Homicide Investigations Stall Without Cooperating Witnesses

Evanston police continue to investigate the recent shooting deaths of Justin Murray, 19, and Javar Bamberg, 23. A lack of cooperating witnesses has stymied the investigation, police say.

Police say a lack of cooperating witnesses has stymied their investigation into the recent shooting deaths of two young Evanston men.  Detectives have identified possible suspects in the homicides of Justin Murray, 19, on Nov. 29, and Javar Bamberg, 23, on Dec. 12, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott. However, they do not yet have enough information to press charges, he said.  “Not having a cooperative witness base is probably our biggest obstruction to bringing charges,” Parrott told Patch on Friday. Want to stay up to date on the latest news in Evanston? Sign up for our free newsletter. Police need evidence that ties a suspect to either of the crime scenes, he explained. Pretty sad that people who know something are not willing to come forward! Maybe they are afraid of some sort of retaliation against their family? I think there is more to this than we all know. Terrible to have to live in fear and to have this on your conscience.   more ›

Guns In Schools? Are You Kidding Me?

Opinion columnist Christine Wolf responds to the National Rifle Association's suggestion of placing armed guards in schools, describing it as "the worst idea I've heard in a long time."

Protecting schools with armed guards won’t do a thing. In fact, it’s one of the worst ideas I’ve heard in a long time. Believe me, I understand why people like the idea – especially those who live closest to Newtown, CT, where a gunman opened fire in an elementary school last month, killing 20 kids and adults. Their worlds are shattered. They’re in shock. They’re angry and they never want to see something like it happen again. But it will, and a guard at the front door with a pistol won’t save anyone from a determined individual armed with intent and a gun. It’s time everyone stops the posturing, because that’s really what it is. The U.S. government claims its hands are tied over the right to bear arms. The National Rifle Association …

Man Convicted in Keg Murder Caught With Ammunition, Police Say

Antoine Hill, who was convicted in the 2005 murder of Robert Gresham at the Keg in Evanston, was recently charged with unlawful use of a weapon after a parole check at his Chicago residence.

The man convicted of a 2005 murder in Evanston, now out on parole, was arrested Friday when corrections officers found ammunition at his home, according to police. Antoine Brian Hill, 27, was arrested and charged with unlawful use of a weapon at 9 a.m. Dec. 14, after parole officers discovered the ammunition at his Chicago home during a routine parole check, police said. Hill had been released on parole Sept. 24 after serving six years of an 18-year prison sentence on charges of second-degree murder, according to the Illinois Department of Corrections. According to court documents, Hill shot and killed 22-year-old Evanston resident Robert Gresham after the two got into an argument at the Keg in fall 2005. Hill was 19 and an Evanston …

City's Gun Buyback Nets 45 Weapons

Police collected 26 handguns, 15 rifles and four shotguns during a gun buyback program Saturday, Dec. 15, at Christ Temple MB Church in Evanston.

Evanston residents turned in a total of 45 firearms during a gun buyback program held this Saturday at Christ Temple MB Church, police said.  Of those weapons, 26 were handguns, 15 were rifles and four were shotguns, according to a press release from the police department. Several people also turned in ammunition and BB guns, police said.  Speaking to Patch on Saturday, Police Chief Richard Eddington said he considered the program a success.
