JT's, Koco Table and Leonie's Delice Bakery offer new options for breakfast, lunch, dinner and dessert.
Hungry for something new? Evanston's restaurant scene has gotten a boost with the recent openings of a family-friendly all-day spot, a Korean restaurant and a Haitian bakery. Downtown, JT's Bar & Grill opened in October at 1639 Orrington Ave., a space that has been vacant for years since the closing of Omaggio. Owner Sherrie Vidinich lives in Chicago but is looking into moving to Evanston. “We love Evanston," she said. "I grew up in Rogers Park so we used to venture here all the time as teenagers.” Related: 5 New Eateries Opening Downtown, On Howard Street Her restaurant, which is open from 7 a.m. to 3 a.m. daily, serves American fare with a splash of Mexican in the form of burritos and tacos. Why order a hot dog when you can have a fowler?
There are two menus at Little Louie's at 1342 Shermer Rd. in Northbrook — one with standard burgers and hot dogs and everything else you would expect from a fast food joint. The other menu is less typical, offering items called McLovin, Ace Ventura and La Bubba Rosa. The weird wall of sandwiches at Little Louie's has about 20 different items inspired by flavors, movies and whatever else might be on owner Peter Weiss's mind at the time. "Everything that up there is good and it sells," Weiss said. "Some people come in and just order off the wall." The 45-year-old business hasn't always offered quirky, movie-inspired sandwiches. Weiss came up with the idea after he bought the restaurant 15 years ago. "I'm all about flavors," Weiss said. "…

Opinion columnist Christine Wolf interviews three friends who have "re-opened" a beloved top-of-the-tracks commuter restaurant at the Central Street Metra Station.
When I first moved to Evanston in 1997, I made a daily commute to and from my office in Chicago on the Metra line. It wasn’t a long commute from the Davis Street station to the city, but it felt like a grind, especially since I was pregnant. Now that I write from my home, however, I’m envious of the Metra morning commuters traveling from Evanston’s Central Street Station, where Upstairs Café just opened. Evanston residents and friends Elizabeth Hubbard, Gail Doeff, and Shelley Patterson opened Upstairs Café on Nov. 5, 2012. They bought the business from Mary Lou Smith and her husband, Bill, who’d owned and operated the cafe as Top of the Tracks for 24 years. I stopped by the new place on the third day of business to sample the baked goods …

Evanston resident Jeff Russell had already passed ownership to his daughter, Maria, before he passed away Sept. 12.
Two months after Cross-Rhodes founder Jeff Russell's death, business is back to normal at the Greek restaurant at 913 Chicago Ave. Russell died Sept. 12 from injuries sustained from a fall. The restaurant closed that day and held a memorial gathering from the following evening, which brought in hundreds of people who wanted to celebrate his life. “They were going out the door until 9:30,” says owner Maria Russell, Jeff's daughter. “I don’t think my father knew how much he was loved in the city. I think he would be in awe. It’s one thing to know that people are supportive. It’s another thing to physically see it. It was so wonderful to see how many people really did care about him and were touched by him.” Related: Cross-Rhodes Restaurant …

The store is offering up to 40% discounts as it clears its inventory. Ten 27 Cycles reopened under a new name after four decades as Turin Bicycle. The new store will be part of a national chain.
After more than four decades operating as Turin Bicycle and then as Ten 27 Cycles, the independent bike store at 1027 Davis St. in Evanston will close this winter and reopen as part of a national chain. Proprietor Chris Mailing took over as the majority owner of Turin Bicycle in 2004 and became sole owner in May. But Lee Katz, who opened the Evanston store in 1971 and co-owns a Turin Bicycle store in Denver, had the rights to the name. Mailing found himself embroiled in a legal battle as he tried to tie his renamed Ten 27 Cycles to Turin in ads and on the business' website, using the old store name. “It's just turned out to be a lot more difficult and a lot more expensive than I had expected at the outset," Mailing said. "There's just been…

Griffin Cox and his father, Ken Cox, recently opened the café serving coffee, espresso, and upscale sandwiches and pastries in the bottom floor of the office building at 1840 Oak Ave.
The idea for Prana Café, a new coffee shop at 1840 Oak Ave. in Evanston, was born on a trip across the country. Café owner Griffin Cox and his father, Ken Cox, embarked on a road trip to California two years ago, after Griffin’s mother passed away. Griffin, who is 19, took a year’s leave from the University of Chicago, while Ken took time off from his business as a decorator. On their trip, Griffin and Ken decided to visit the original Philz Coffee, now a chain with several locations in California. Owner Phil Jaber is known for carefully crafting his unique blends and for selling coffee brewed one cup at a time. Want to stay up to date on the latest business news in Evanston?
