My 2012 Spring Break Story

Traveling the country with friends proves to be more rewarding than I'd anticipated.

“Who ordered the Super Grits?” the waitress says as she delivers our dinners.  I expect her to add, “Y’all done come from somewhere else?” but she’s too busy for small talk. The bayside restaurant in Apalachicola, Florida is jammed. My husband and my friend Becca raise their hands.  “Right here,” they say. “Alrighty,” she says. “And how about the crab cake?” “That’s me,” I say, taking the plate. God, this looks delicious. “Gumbo and oysters on the half-shell?” she says, pronouncing oysters as"oh-sters". What did you do over your spring break?

Whether you're in grade school, high school or college, what have you done over your spring break? If you're beyond those years, what's your favorite spring break memory?  Were you crazy? Favorite spring break: Junior year of college, when I went to India for the first time. Everything about it was amazing. Least favorite spring break: Grad school, when our thesis was due on the first day back from break. Nobody went on vacation - we all spent the entire week pulling consecutive all-nighters in various classrooms.   more ›

We did h ave those lovely independent bookstores, and they were all put out of business by Barnes and Noble before Borders ever came on the scene. When it comes to scheduling book signings, this is better done by the marketing department of the publisher.
