Four-time Olympic gold medalist Matt Grevers made an appearance at his father’s business, Chalet Nursery, in Wilmette Wednesday afternoon to meet with fans, sign posters and pose for photos. Grevers, who grew up and began his swimming career in Lake Forest, took home two gold and one silver medal at the London 2012 Olympics. He did the same in Beijing in 2008. As the son of award-winning landscape designer Ed Grevers, Matt joined his dad to talk “best practices” in the garden and swimming pool after meeting with fans. Lake Forest’s Matt Grevers becomes favorite to claim 100-meter backstroke gold medal in the 2012 Summer Olympics.
(Update at 3:30 p.m. Sunday) Matt Grevers swam into the finals of the 100-meter backstroke during today’s semifinals at the 2012 Olympics coming within .22 of a second of the Olympic record clocking the fastest qualifying time. The Lake Forest High School and Northwestern University graduate’s time advances him, and the next seven qualifiers that competed in both semifinals, to Monday’s final at 1:58 p.m. Chicago time or 7:56 p.m. London time. It can be seen streamed live on Comcast and on NBC (WMAQ TV, Ch. 5 in Chicago). Trevians score 250 points for best ever performance by a team since 1975
Evanston Township High School served as hosts for the boys’ state swimming championship Friday and Saturday, but it was New Trier that was the weekend's big winner. The Wildkits had just one team in the finals. The 200-yard medley relay team of Christian Stakovic, Wesley Marberry, McKenzie Miller and Christopher Russo, finished 12th with a time of 1:37.34. Coach Kevin Auger says that he expects his team to be more represented next year. “I am really happy actually,” Auger said. “We knew at the beginning of the year we were going to qualify a lot of kids. More than 48,000 ballots were received last week and North Shore Country Day's Austin Curren came out on top, winning Athlete of the Week. The nominees for North Shore Patch Athlete of the Week, Feb. 6 - Feb. 12: Christine Stitcher, junior, girls gymnastics, Deerfield – Stitcher qualified for the state meet for the second year in a row. The Deerfield junior recorded a 36.825 in the all-around and also qualified in floor and uneven bars at the Niles North Sectional. The state meet will be held next week at Palatine High School. M.J. Pritchard, junior, wrestling, New Trier – Pritchard qualified for the wrestling state championships by taking third place in the 113-pound division of the Class 3A Barrington Sectional. More than 1,480 ballots were cast in last week's competition and Maine West's Brittany Collins was named the Patch Athlete of the Week. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 29 - Feb. 5: Austin Curren, junior, boys basketball, North Shore Country Day – Curren has had point totals of 25, 28 and 32 points in three conference wins for the Raiders. During that time he’s shot 67 percent from the field (29/43) and has turned the ball over only five times. Curren is also averaging 5.5 rebounds per game. Molly Kleppin, junior, girls basketball, Niles West - Kleppin led the Wolves with 15 points in a tough win against Maine South. The nominees for Patch Athlete of the Week, Jan. 23 - Jan. 29: Jim McPike, senior, wrestling, Glenbrook North – McPike took the conference championship in the 170-pound division. The senior from Glenbrook North pinned New Trier’s Luke Hidder in the second period of the conference finals to claim the championship. The win moved McPike to 19-5 on the year. Dashae Shumate, sophomore, girls basketball, Niles West – Shumate made the game-winning layup for Niles West against Maine South last week. Her two points as time expired gave the Wolves a 42-41 win. More than 71,000 votes were cast in last week's contest and Niles West's Ryan Miller was voted as the Athlete of the Week. Miller won the 100 butterfly at the Buffalo Grove Invitational, finishing in 54.63 seconds. Miller also took third in the 200 individual medley (2 minutes 6.85 seconds). The Niles West senior received 39,586 votes, or 55 percent. HONORABLE MENTION Zach Cole, senior, boys bowling, Deerfield –Cole took third place at the sectional championships with a 1332 in his six-game series.
