Walgreens Proposed at UBAA Tap Site; Developers Rejected Tilted Kilt

UBAA Tap will most likely be redeveloped into another Walgreens. The property sits on the Evanston-Skokie border and might have been a Tilted Kilt or even McDonalds, according to the developer.

A Walgreens store could be moving in to the former site of UBAA Tap at 9956 Crawford Ave., after developers turned down offers from several other tenants including Tilted Kilt, a Hooter's like bar and restaurant chain. UBAA Tap - also formerly known as UBAA Old Crawford Inn - first opened its doors in 1939. Patch food critic Bill Burman described the restaurant by saying, "stopping in here is like paying a visit to your grandmother, if she were the type to cook you up some strong wings, put the game on for you and pour you a beer." The restaurant closed its doors around October of last year, and has been on the market for development ever since. The location sits across the street from Evanston homeowners on Crawford Avenue and a large …

50 Beers On Tap At New Downtown Spot

After a failed attempt to bring the Hooter’s-like restaurant Tilted Kilt to the Fountain Square building, owner Ted Mavrakis is ready to open a World of Beer bar and restaurant there in December.

At the former Prudential real estate offices in Fountain Square, construction crews have been hard at work for weeks installing a curving bar, a row of shining taps and a wall full of coolers ready to hold more than 50 varieties of craft beer.  After three years of vacancy at 1601 Sherman Ave., a World of Beer franchise is opening up at the site in downtown Evanston this December. “Our emphasis will be craft beers that are local that people can’t get in other places,” explains general manager Mark Damas. The World of Beer company is a national chain that started in Florida in 2007. Evanston’s location will be only the second location in Illinois, joining a World of Beer that opened within the past year in Naperville. If construction goes …

Mayor Rejects Tilted Kilt Liquor License

The owner of the Hooters-like bar and restaurant had hoped to open the restaurant in Fountain Square in downtown Evanston.

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl has rejected a liquor license for the Tilted Kilt, a Hooters-like bar and restaurant that was slated to open in the heart of downtown Evanston. "The reasons for the denial stem from the public safety concerns expressed by the residents and the fact that the proposed licensee's establishment does not comply with recognized Evanston community standards," Tisdahl wrote in her rejection notice. "The applicant simply cannot overcome the strong community-based opposition to placing a congested and noisy bar in that proposed location," she wrote. The notice also said that the owner expressed there would be "no deviation in staff attire," as the dress code of low-cut tops, push-up bras, and short skirts would …

Readers, I have kept the comments open on this for a while, and we've had a great discussion here with a lot of different perspectives represented. I appreciate all the input from everyone, however at this point the issue is now over and the comments have turned into attacks and threats, which is not acceptable based on our community standards (http://evanston.patch.com/terms). I'm going to close…   more ›

A Search For Balance

Can we each find our share of happiness in Evanston?

The word balance, used as a noun, is defined by Dictionary.com as: 1. a state of equilibrium or equipoise; equal distribution of weight, amount, etc. 2. something used to produce equilibrium; counterpoise. 3. mental steadiness or emotional stability; habit of calm behavior, judgment, etc.   With so many questions swirling around Evanston these days, it’s hard to find answers – let alone balance  -- when the topics themselves aren’t exactly black or white.  For instance... Why are there so many shootings in Evanston? Do our children receive a decent public education? How can we attract more business to Evanston? Should we ban plastic bags altogether? Why does Trader Joe’s avoid coming here? Should a business like The Tilted Kilt open in the…

Mayor Delays Decision on Tilted Kilt Liquor License

The debate raged on Tuesday night at the Liquor Control Review Board meeting over whether the Tilted Kilt should be granted a liquor license and allowed to open in downtown Evanston.

Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl provided no resolution at Tuesday night’s Liquor Control Review Board meeting to the debate over whether the Tilted Kilt should be granted a liquor license, and hence be allowed to open in downtown Evanston’s Fountain Square. Tisdahl, who holds the sole authority to allocate liquor licenses, said she will spend the coming days reviewing the application, supporting documents and other relevant information before providing a written decision sometime next week on whether to grant the Hooters-like Celtic themed restaurant and bar the right to serve alcohol. Recently, the news of a Tilted Kilt potentially opening at 807 Davis St. caused a stir among some residents who decried the establishment as little more …

About Town

Are You Kidding Me?

Are we THIS desperate?

I was planning to write a lovely, neutral piece about Earth Day, but I got to thinking about organic things like melons and SMACK -- in my face -- I saw the photo of the Tilted Kilt beauty serving something hot and steamy in a chafing dish and I just lost my train of thought. And how are you on this Earth Day? My daughter describes the lovely Tilted Kilt woman as a "uni-boob".  She describes the Tilted Kilt as an Evanston Ruiner: one that disturbs the "naturalness" of Evanston. "What's the naturalness of Evanston?" I ask. "Evanston's about nice people. There's a lot of beautiful things in Evanston.  You don't want people visiting Evanston and seeing a restaurant like that and noticing how it doesn't go with Evanston's theme," she said. …

I lived in Evanston before there was a liquor store. In other words, as teenagers, we'd drive into Roger's Park and try to find a "nice adult" to buy us beer. Then we'd drive back over the border, drink, and act stupid, like many teenagers and college kids do. It took years before the city approved it-first-ever liquor store, which has now been in business for 20+ years. Did opening up a liquor …   more ›

Tilted Kilt’s Draft Selection Isn’t The Only Thing That’s Huge

Their meatloaf sandwich looks massive, too.

Apparently, there’s an Irish-pub-like-franchise-establishment called The Tilted Kilt attempting to obtain a liquor license at 1601 Sherman Avenue (Fountain Square).  A quick look at the website proves it’s very Hooters-like.   Yes, they serve wings ... and clam strips ... now please, put your eyeballs back in your heads and read on. Do we really want an establishment like this in Evanston? Granted, this isn’t the place families would gather after Sunday afternoon soccer games. But, it’s not like there’s a dearth of Irish pubs in town (Celtic Knot? Tommy Nevins?), either. Here’s a peek at the Tilted Kilt's online menu:  FAT BASTARD’S* MEATLOAF SANDWICH  Get in my belly. A generous portion of our made-from-scratch Meatloaf served open faced …
