The popular grocery store will be replacing Klein Tools at the intersection of Touhy Avenue and McCormick Boulevard in Skokie, just a few blocks from the Evanston border.
The local grocery store market is heating up. While Trader Joe's is coming to Evanston sometime this year, Skokie is now getting a Mariano's Fresh Market. The popular grocery chain will replace the now vacant Klein Tools, at 7200 N. McCormick Blvd., which closed its doors in December 2011. Located a few blocks from Howard-Hartrey shopping plaza in Evanston, the new store will be approximately 75,000 square feet and feature produce, meats, a bakery, a deli and other amenities, including an Italian coffee shop, serving authentic gelato, a wood-fired pizza oven, sit down sushi bar, cook-to-order food service and even a pharmacy. The nine-acre redevelopment site also will include a restaurant on the corner, likely from a national chain, a …

Developers and local officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday for a Trader Joe's planned at 1211 Chicago Ave. in Evanston. The store is expected to open in October.
Wielding a golden-colored shovel, Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl officially broke ground Thursday on a new Trader Joe’s planned for 1211 Chicago Ave. Local officials joined representatives of the developer, Terraco, Inc., to mark the beginning of construction on the 13,000-square-foot store planned for the former location of Blockbuster Video. The grocery store is long awaited in Evanston, where a 2008 deal to bring Trader Joe’s failed. Residents have been talking of bringing the store to town for years, and broke into spontaneous applause when site plans were announced in June 2012. "The development of this site into a new Trader Joe's is yet another sign that Evanston's economic health is definitely on the upswing," Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl said in a press release for the city. Construction work has already begun at 1211 Chicago Ave., where developer Terraco is building a new Trader Joe’s location.
Demolition is set to begin next week at the old Blockbuster store on Chicago Avenue, where a new Trader Joe’s is expected to open this summer. The grocery store at 1211 Chicago Ave. will most likely open in late June or early July, according to Scott Gendell, president of Terraco, Inc., whose company is developing the site. Fencing has already gone up around the construction site, and demolition will begin in earnest next Monday, Gendell said. That process will take approximately two weeks, at which point crews will begin preparing the site for actual construction. Want to stay up to date on the latest business news in Evanston? Amidst a nation-wide recall on more than 100 products, the North Shore's branches of the grocery store chain are offering refunds to customers who recently bought the items.
Trader Joe’s corporate officials say they are acting “out of an abundance of caution” and ordering the recall of several house brand nut butter products over salmonella concerns. “Trader Joe’s Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter” should not be eaten, the Monrovia-based specialty grocery chain said. “We have no confirmed information that suggests this peanut butter is unsafe to eat,” the company stated. But the food should not be eaten “pending health-related inquiries.” Shortly after the peanut butter recall, the company decided to recall cashew butter, tahini and roasted blanched peanut products, all of which are manufactured at the same Sunland, Inc. plant in New Mexico, CNN reports. According to the Centers for Disease Control and …

Ald. Melissa Wynne announced that in an e-mail to residents that Trader Joe’s developer Terraco has redrawn site plans to close off store access to the alley altogether.
Third Ward Ald. Melissa Wynne announced Wednesday that the developer for Trader Joe’s has revised its plans and will completely close off its delivery trucks’ access to an alley shared with single-family homes. After neighbors raised concerns about the site plans—which initially permitted some access to the alley—Wynne arranged meetings with representatives from Trader Joe’s and Terraco, the developer. Scheduled to go to the plan commission for review Wednesday night, Terraco’s initial proposal called for delivery trucks to enter and exit the site at 1211 Chicago Avenue entirely from the street. It also allowed vehicles to maneuver into the alley to load and unload once they had entered the lot—a stipulation that made neighbors uneasy. …
As the proposed store's site plan goes to the plan commission for a vote Wednesday, neighbors say they are concerned about the effect delivery traffic from the grocery store might have on the alley behind their homes.
Evanston's plan commission is expected to consider a proposal for the development of a 13,000-square-foot Trader Joe's store on Chicago Avenue at tonight's meeting. While the site plan debuted to mostly positive feedback (and even applause) from neighbors in May, some residents say they are concerned about how the store's delivery trucks will share an already busy alley with their garages. Planned for a spring 2013 opening, Trader Joe's will be located at the former Blockbuster site at 1211 Chicago Avenue, which developer Terraco purchased for $2.3 million in August 2011. According to Trader Joe’s regional vice president Adam Mutolo, the 27-foot building composed of steel and red brick will be similar in size and layout to the one in …

While residents (literally) applauded a new Trader Joe's store planned for 1211 Chicago Avenue at a meeting with the developer Thursday, they also raised questions about traffic congestion. What do you think?
Mention Chicago Avenue, and you can't blame an Evanstonian for picturing brakelights and orange traffic cones. A streetscaping project has clogged the street from South Boulevard to Main Street since April, and is expected to continue through June 15. On top of that, both lanes were blocked off between Church and Clark Streets yesterday for installation of a chiller system on top of a new apartment building. So when residents had the chance to talk to the developer of the new Trader Joe's store planned for 1211 Chicago Ave. last Thursday, many wanted to know about traffic issues. In particular, they worried that the story would create congestion on Chicago Avenue as drivers entered and exited the parking lot. Third ward Alderman Melissa …

At a meeting Thursday, the developer and architect answered questions about a 13,000-square-foot Trader Joe's store planned for a spring 2013 opening at 1211 Chicago Avenue.
The tale of Trader Joe’s coming to Evanston is already the stuff of legend. When a 2008 deal to bring the store to Evanston failed, city manager Wally Bobkiewicz sent a member of his economic development staff to the Trader Joe’s in Northbrook with a mission. “He said, ‘Go and give your business card to someone at Trader Joe’s, and don’t leave until someone takes it,’” third ward Alderman Melissa Wynne told residents Thursday. A few days later, city staff got a call from the vice president of real estate at Trader Joe’s. Want to keep up with the latest business news in Evanston?
