Evanston's Quirky? Why Would Anyone Think That?

My fleeting "rein date" with Alex Añón and Ryan Pavlik of Bucephalus Bikes.

One thing Evanston has a reputation for is quirkiness; Alex Añón and Ryan Pavlik, co-owners of Bucephalus Bikes, brought that notion to life the morning of Oct. 5 while riding their “specialized” bikes around town during Washington Elementary School’s annual “Walk-and-Roll To School Day,” a local celebration of International Walk To School Day. Wondering what’s up with the horses? Here’s a little background from Bucephalus Bikes’ website: Bucephalus was the name given to Alexander the Great’s horse.  According to legend, Bucephalus was an exceptionally loyal horse.  Alexander had a special bond with him and the pair sparked a cult in which it was expected that great leaders have a favorite horse.   The literal meaning of Bucephalus is “ox …

About Town

Cooling Off

Ah, the delightfully breezy evenings in an idyllic town called Evanston.

After a long, hot, lovely summer in Evanston, the windows are now open to the fall-like temperatures. It’s such a liberating feeling.  No more air conditioning. No more stuffy house. No more…oh shoot…I forgot…now the neighbors can hear everything. It’s not like we’re doing anything untoward here, but it just takes some getting used to. Call me sensitive, but I care that our neighbors might overhear the shenanigans going on in our Evanston household. For instance, our middle-schoolers (at Nichols) and our 3rd grader (at Washington ) had a little “celebration” at dinner last night over the fact that both schools’ principals are pregnant.  WHAT? How did District 65 allow that?! (Seriously, congratulations to both Principal Kate Ellison of …

Road Trip!

Destination: Skevanston

The other day in the car, my 8-year-old announced, “Someday this summer, could we take a trip?” I wondered if he had a particular place in mind.  Yosemite? The Grand Canyon? Disneyworld? “Where would you like to go, Buddy?” I asked. “Well,” he said, “I was thinking…”  His voice trailed off, and I tried to imagine all the places he’s never been.  As a mom, I can’t help but try and anticipate what he’s thinking.  Visions of a long road trip, paused only by stretch-breaks, gas stops and souvenir shopping, filled my head.  Nah, I thought.  He’d definitely prefer something more exciting and exotic, something requiring an airplane or a souped-up RV. “Mom,” he said.  “I think it might be fun to go to Skevanston.” Ah, Skevanston. If you’ve never …

Japan Earthquake

Aftershocks touch this Evanston resident in a unique way.

It’s been a long winter, and the recent weeks of pure gray skies have hit me hard. Like many people these days, I’ve frequently felt overwhelmed and over-scheduled; looking further back, it’s actually been a tumultuous fall and winter.   Since September, I’ve been grieving the deaths of three family members, and I know several friends going through extremely difficult times.     Folks of my grandparents’ generation would no doubt warn me that it's nobody’s business, but I’m here to say: I’m one of the 18 million Americans who suffer from depression.  I can be one of those “hypersensitive” types who often takes things too personally, worries about far more than I should, and occasionally hibernates when the world feels too raw.  So, as the …

There were some protesters outside the base, but they were calm. I was actually interviewed by a tv station about whether or not my ship (the USS Carl Vinson) had nuclear weapons onboard. I answered that I could not confirm or deny the presence of such weapons, but that we are there to protect them and we are friends. How ironic that a few weeks prior, I was taking pictures of the USS Arizona …   more ›

Five Good Things: Halloween Edition

This week we're presenting a Halloween themed weekend roundup full of festivals for kids, performances for adults, and a combination of costumes and sugary treats for everyone.

Official Trick-or-Treating hours in the city of Evanston are 4:00 – 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 31. If you're eager to give out candy, please have your house lights on during this time. If you're taking kids around the block, the city asks that you please respect houses without lights on. Washington School Fall Fest Rain or Shine, this Saturday Washington Elementary will be all about outdoor fun. Kids can enjoy a bouncy castle, giant slide, haunted house, crafts, games, and, best of all, pony rides. Dress the kids in costume and bring your camera to capture memories of them in action. This is a great way to burn off some of the sugar energy from all the candy they'll be eating this weekend. October 30, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Washington …

Got Hope?

Bringing an idea to life.

Debra Clark is a crossing guard for School District 65.  Every morning and every afternoon, she greets and protects children where Florence Avenue and Lee Street meet. Rain or shine, Clark stands in the middle of this congested, three-way intersection as children and adults hustle into and out of Washington Elementary School. Her distinctive, friendly voice can be heard from blocks away: To the kids:  "I got you, babies!" To the adults:  "Don't worry.  I got your babies!" To anyone listening:  "I got everybody!  Have a GOOD day!" Years ago, before she was hired by the District, Clark noticed the dangerous intersection and decided to help children and adults navigate the bustling junction.  A school bus driver "lent" her a retractable  stop…
