Alcohol Factored Into Maddula’s Drowning, Police Say

The Northwestern University sophomore drowned in Wilmette Harbor last September. Police say he had a blood alcohol content roughly twice the legal limit for driving.

Evanston police say alcohol was a contributing factor in the accidental drowning of Northwestern University sophomore Harsha Maddula, whose body was found in Wilmette Harbor in September 2012.  A toxicology report from the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office indicated that Maddula had a blood alcohol level of .125, or roughly 1.5 times the legal driving limit of .08, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Jay Parrott. “Although the medical examiner is determining the death to be a drowning, and the cause undetermined, the investigation from the police department appears to show that this was accidental in nature with a contributing factor being alcohol consumption,” Parrott told Patch. Ridiculous how easy the access to alcohol is for minor young adults, many of them who have been responsible in every other aspect of their life. Had a doctor at the U of A tell me that binge drinking is rampant. How many alcohol related deaths will it take …   more ›

Police: Alcohol May Factor Into Maddula’s Drowning

Witnesses say Northwestern student Harsha Maddula was drinking alcohol at a party he attended before he drowned in Wilmette Harbor this September, according to police.

Evanston police say alcohol may be a contributing factor in the death of Harsha Maddula, a Northwestern University sophomore who drowned in Wilmette Harbor this September. Since his death, police have been interviewing students who attended the party with Maddula and canvassed the area around Wilmette Harbor. UPDATE - Medical Examiner: NU Student Died of Drowning

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled that the cause of Maddula's death was drowning, either accidental or a suicide.

One day after police found the body of 18-year-old Northwestern sophomore Harsha Maddula in the waters of Wilmette Harbor, officials say his death was caused by drowning. A representative of the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office told Patch Friday, Sept. 28, that the cause of Maddula's death was accidental. But on Friday, Oct. 5, as police continued their investigation into his death, a spokesperson said the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office now considered it "undetermined," meaning it could be either a suicide or an accident. Maddula, of New Hyde Park, NY, was last seen alive on Saturday, Sept. 22, at 12:30 a.m., walking home from a party he attended off campus.  Police traced his cell phone signal and determined that it …
