Poll Results: Readers Believe Concealed Carry Decreases Violence

Latest Patch poll results come in wake of U.S. Senate defeat of legislation expanding background checks. Sen. Kirk is critical of vote.

After a debate broke out among Patch readers in the wake of an armed robbery in Deerfield April 8 over whether an armed citizenry would increase or reduce crime. A few days later Patch conducted an unscientific poll among its readers to see which route people felt was best and a majority believe concealed carry will decrease crime in the area. Of the 66 people who responded, 41 are in favor and 25 opposed. Earlier: Will Concealed Carry Increase or Decrease Gun Violence The poll was conducted while the United Senate was debating and defeated legislation to expand background checks before purchasing a gun, 54-46, Wednesday drawing criticism from Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Highland Park). “I am disappointed that the Senate could not come together to …

Governor Quinn: Local Communities Should Have Control in Conceal Carry Law

Gov. Quinn is looking for ways to tighten Illinois' impending conceal carry law, the Chicago Tribune reported this week.

Gov. Pat Quinn said earlier this week he thinks Illinois communities should be able to exert some local control when it comes to a state conceal carry gun law, according to a report in the Chicago Tribune. The state is working to create a concealed carry law by the June 9 deadline. A federal court ruled late last year that Illinois’ ban on conceal carry was unconstitutional. "I am not excited about this at all," the Tribune reported Quinn as saying. "If this has to happen, it has to have the proper restrictions and limitations... I think we should make sure it's very tight and I think local communities, wherever they are, should have the option to make it as tight as possible in their community." Quinn also has stated his opposition to …

Why would you want to carry a loaded gun? We have Police and they are only a few minutes away if you call 911 and report what is your emergency, your name, location and what the offender looks like, and can then repeat it all over again, while the dispatcher tries to figure out you are in their jurisdiction or whether they should transfer you to another dispatcher in another town, so you can …   more ›

Readers: Guns Are Not the Issue, It’s the People

Some Patch readers say concealed carry laws work to stop crimes. Other readers disagree.

Following the Atlanta school shooting on Jan. 31, where a student opened fire at Price Middle School, shooting a 14-year-old in the neck before armed officer at the school stopped the shooter, Patch asked readers Do you believe Obama’s gun proposal will help prevent school shootings?  Patch received more than 10 comments; here are some of the responses, which have been edited for length, grammar and clarity.  “Hard to say guns are the issue, seems who is in possession of the gun is the issue,” Patch reader b garrett wrote.  Some readers say a strong defense is vital to stopping shooting sprees.  “If all civilians were licensed to carry guns, it would make for a very polite society,” Patch reader Harry Gio wrote. “These ‘shooting spree’ …

How Can We Each Fight Gun Violence?

Some politicians have shared their ideas of how to curb gun violence. Now we invite you to jump into the discussion and share your thoughts in the comment section.

As Vice President Joe Biden prepares to meet with the National Rifle Association and other gun-ownership groups for talks at the White House Thursday, many politicians have voiced what they think should be done to curb gun violence.  Among those politicians are several North Shore village mayors and presidents who recently joined Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel to call for stronger gun regulation as part of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, a coalition aimed at cracking down on illegal guns. The coalition recently aired a commercial featuring Roxanna Green, the mother of one of those killed in the 2011 Tucson shootings, urging people to sign a petition on www.DemandAPlan.org.  Below is a look at how other state and local leaders are taking action in…

Poll: Should Illinois Allow Concealed Carry?

The Illinois House is considering a bill that would allow licensed individuals to carry concealed firearms.

Illinois remains the only state in the country that does not allow licensed individuals to carry concealed firearms. A bill in the House could change that. House Bill 5745 would allow the Illinois State Police to issue a license to individuals allowing them to carry a firearm. The bill also sets forth the requirements and qualifications individuals would have to meet to be granted a license. The Huffington Post reports that gun rights advocates have repeatedly tried to get a concealed carry law passed. Last year a similar measure failed by six votes. As the Capitol Fax blog pointed out, the issue has pitted downstate elected officials against their Chicago peers. Opponents of concealed carry point to situations such as the Trayvon Martin…
