Construction To Begin Soon on Church, Sheridan

Work on three public works projects begins June 18: resurfacing Church Street, a plaza with rain garden at Dodge and Lake and traffic signal modernization on Sheridan.

‘Tis the season for construction—and, right on time, work on a new batch of projects in Evanston will soon be underway.  On Monday, June 18, the city’s Public Works Department will begin three new construction projects, according to a press release from city spokesperson Eric Palmer. Those include resurfacing Church Street and installing a protected bike path, street-scaping at Dodge Avenue and Lake Street and traffic signal improvements on Sheridan Road.  On Church Street, public works crews will grind the asphalt, repair the roadway base and replace the asphalt surface. Construction on Church Street Protected Bike Lane Begins in August

Downtown businesses are gearing up for construction of Evanston’s very first protected bike lane this summer.

On August 1, the city crews will begin work on the new bike lane, to be located on Church Street between Chicago and Ridge avenues. Parking spots will be shifted away from the curb to make room for the lane, which will be demarcated by a line of white posts and paint on the pavement, according to city officials.    “This is the first of its kind in the city,” notes city planner Craig Sklennar.  Construction on the project will last into the fall, with street resurfacing last on the list. “Grinding and paving won’t be conducive to outdoor dining,” director of public works Suzette Robinson acknowledged at a meeting of the Downtown Evanston business group Thursday. I don't have any problem with people commuting to work or just for fun on their bikes, I do however have a huge complaint that they do NOT follow the rules of the road! There have been way to many times that I have either wittnessed bikes going through red lights and or stop signs with close misses of being hit.
