Did Evanston's 'Safe Summer Initiative' Work?

Dissecting the results of Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl's promise to make summer 2011 safe for Evanston's youth.

Toward the end of spring, Evanston Mayor Elizabeth Tisdahl announced plans for a city-wide Safe Summer Initiative designed primarily to keep Evanston’s youth safe from street violence. But nearly five months after the initiative was launched at the June 4 Safe Summer Summit, it remains difficult to assess the program’s successes and failures. Last year, Evanston experienced a dramatic spike in homicides -- eight in 2010 compared to only one in 2009 -- and at least five of the victims were between the ages of 19 and 26. In response, Tisdahl assembled a task force composed of city department representatives, faith community leaders, nonprofit heads and ETHS students to brainstorm new ideas that could be implemented quickly and cheaply to …
