Urban Farm Marks One Year on Howard Street

The Talking Farm, an Evanston-based nonprofit, celebrates the one-year anniversary of a land use agreement with the Skokie Park District for a site at 3701 Howard St. in Skokie.

Standing on two acres of cleared land off busy Howard Street, Linda Kruhmin envisions a line of hazelnut trees; beds of heirloom tomatoes, peppers and eggplants; an orchard of dwarf fruit trees; and maybe even a rice paddy. That vision is the hard-won future of this land, where Kruhmin is the operations manager for The Talking Farm, an Evanston-based nonprofit. The group’s fledgling urban produce farm marks its first full year this June at 3701 Howard St. in Skokie, where a plot of pastoral activity is now taking shape among gas stations, auto body shops and rental storage facilities, just behind the Skokie Tot Learning Center. Folks, I just got an update from the Talking Farm saying the Birthday Bash is cancelled. "Due to unforeseen circumstances, we are not able to hold our Birthday Bash on June 16th, but we will still have our Work Day planned. Help build and plant display beds in our demonstration garden."   more ›

YWCA to Expand Urban Farming Initiative

The YWCA said the program will help empower local women.

Colorado based CoBank recently announced that it will contribute $34,000 over the next three years to help the YWCA Evanston/North Shore to support an expansion of their urban farming initiative. The urban farm started in the spring of 2009, when the YWCA built a small raised bed vegetable and herb garden to grow fresh produce for Mary Lou’s Place, their domestic violence shelter for women and children. The Evanston-based urban garden is a helpful tool to empower women, according to YWCA Evanston/North Shore Communications Director Julie McBratney. "The women tend the garden and harvest vegetables and herbs for their meals," McBratney told Patch. "They cook their own meals each night, and once a week, the have a lesson in healthy cooking …

Evanston's "Talking Farm" holds community open house.

Hundreds of curious visitors gathered at the Howard Street Farm Saturday evening to learn about and enjoy the new urban farming effort. Guests to the Howard Street Hullabaloo were able to enjoy live music, food, a tour of the grounds, and several educational demonstrations while learning about the farm Saturday.  "The Talking Farm" singed a Use Agreement with the Skokie Park District to use the two-acre plot of land on the Evanston-Skokie border. The purpose of the farm is to provide local, fresh food, and educational opportunities for the community. Ultimately, produce from the farm will be available to local restaurants, farmers’ markets, schools, food pantries, and individuals.
