Unemployment in Evanston Rose from April to June

The city released a report outlining business activity in Evanston from April through June 2013.

The good news is that 13 new businesses opened in Evanston between April and June, creating 29 new full-time jobs, according to a quarterly report released by the city.

The bad news is that unemployment rose during the same time period, from 6.8% in April to 8.4% in June. 

Along with employment and new businesses, the quarterly report also contains information about commercial vacancy rates and commercial spending

Based on commercial spending during the second quarter, the top four projects in Evanston were DaVita Dialysis Center, Three Crowns Park, Regus and Trader Joe's. 

New businesses include the Big Twist restaurant, 1805 Howard St.; the furniture store Ad Hoc Home, 1937 Central St.; the fitness studio Box! Evanston, 739 Main St., and Hewn Bakery, 810 Dempster St. The city estimated that all 13 new businesses generated 29 new full-time jobs, 54 new part-time jobs and $674,974 in capital investment.
