Kafein Reopens Under New Ownership

Evanston coffee shop Kafein has reopened under new ownership after it closed temporarily this spring, the Daily Northwestern reports.

Owner Kelly O'Leary told Patch that she bought the cafe at 1621 Chicago Ave. on March 1, and shut it down to deal with electrical issues

O'Leary bought the business from longtime owner Irene Stics, who died of cancer this spring, according to former general manager Chris Waldron.

Stics opened Kafein in the early ’90s after finishing film school in California, according to Waldron.

She "realized the Midwest didn't have coffee culture at the time like the West Coast did,” he said, and she set out to recreate the West Coast experience with Kafein.

O'Leary told the Daily that "Kafein is the same," but declined to comment on whether the cafe would continue to host open-mic nights or maintain the same late-night hours.
