Evanston Man, 21, Shot and Killed Near ETHS

Police say Cardereon Preister was fatally shot in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue around 11 p.m. Tuesday night.

A 21-year-old man was fatally shot Tuesday night near Evanston Township High School, according to Evanston Police Cmdr. Jason Parrott.

Parrott said police found Cardereon Preister shot in the 1700 block of Leland Avenue around 11 p.m., after someone called to report hearing gunfire.

He was transported to Evanston NorthShore University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards, according to Parrott.

Based on a preliminary investigation, police believe Preister was shot once from behind, in his upper torso. Parrott said police also believe that Priester was the intended target in the shooting.

Parrott said he could not speculate on whether Preister's death may be a gang-related incident, or whether it was connected to the shooting death of a 26-year-old Evanston man in Kansas yesterday.

No suspects are in custody yet, according to Parrott, but police are trying to find witnesses and reviewing surveillance video from the area. Anyone who believes they may have information is asked to call police at 847-866-5000 or to send an anonymous tip to CRIMES (274637) with "EPD TIP" in the subject line.
