ETHS Makes ‘Most Challenging High School’ List
Evanston ranked as the 17th most challenging in Illinois, putting it ahead of all other North Shore schools.
Evanston Township High School ranked 17 on a Washington Post list of the state’s most challenging high schools. Nationally, it is ranked 627. Fewer than 10 percent of high schools nationally made the list.
Although that’s slightly lower than it has ranked on the list in years past, it is ahead of all other North Shore high schools. Highland Park High School is closest, at No. 19. College Prep School of America in Lombard ranked No. 1 in the state.
The ranking uses the number of college-level tests given at the school divided by the number of graduates. The ranking also notes the percentage of students who come from families that qualify for lunch subsidies. At just over 41 percent, Evanston has the fourth highest percentage among the top 20 schools, with only Chicago’s Lincoln Park High School, Jones College Prep and Lane Tech coming in higher.
