Evanston's Jobless Rate Up in May

The city's unemployment rate was 7.3 percent in May, up from 6.8 percent in April.

Even though more people found job in Evanston in May, the unemployment rate increased as even more people started looking for jobs, sending the unemployment rate to 7.3 percent, up from 6.8 percent in April, and up from the 6.3 percent jobless rate in May 2012, Evanston Now reported.

The unemployment rate for the tri-state Chicago metro area was unchanged in May at 9.1 percent and the statewide rate was also unchanged at 8.7 percent, according to figures from the Illinois Department of Employment Security, the website reported.

In February, Evanston’s jobless rate was the highest in 17 months with close to 8 percent of Evanston’s workforce searching for work.
