Des Plaines Honors Evanston Officer Who Saved Child's Life

Information submitted by the city of Des Plaines.

Des Plaines Police Chief William Kushner presented a Life Saving Award to an Evanston police officer who rescued a child from the Des Plaines River.

Officer Sean O'Brien saw a child near Miner Street and River Road in Des PLaines while sitting in traffic off-duty on March 5. The child was not accompanied by an adult. O'Brien saw the child head down Joseph J. Schwab Road toward the Des Plaines River, a press release from the city states.

O'Brien saw the child throw a snowball into the river and jump in after it, becoming completely submerged.

"Officer O'Brien responded without thoughts for his own safety, entering the water, locating the child and bringing him to safety," Des Plaines Police Chief William Kushner said.
