Does ETHS Need A 'Safe School Zone'?

The city and Evanston Township High School may create a "safe school zone" around the high school, where police can arrest people for trespassing. See what else is going on this week in Evanston.

ETHS, City Consider 'Safe School Zone'

On Monday, members of the city council are expected to discuss an intergovernmental agreement that would establish a "safe school zone" around Evanston Township High School. Under Illinois law, a "safe school zone" is an area around a school where police officers can arrest people for trespassing who have been suspended or expelled from school or people whom police and administrators have "a reasonable suspicion to believe [they] will disrupt the orderly operation or the safety or peaceful conduct of the school or school activities."

If the agreement is approved, the city would use two school resource officers from the Evanston Police Department who are already in place at ETHS to enforce the safe school zone.
