Spicy Sichuan Cuisine, Locally Roasted Coffee Coming to Downtown Evanston

Evanston residents can look forward to even more food options downtown, as an authentic Sichuan restaurant opens on Orrington soon--across the street from a cafe serving locally roasted coffee. See what else is new on the Evanston food scene.

Coming Soon Downtown: Lao Sze Chuan

Restaurant Lao Sze Chuan is opening soon at 1633 Orington Ave. downtown. Restaurateur Tony Hu, who owns a dozen restaurants around Chicago and in the suburbs, specializes in authentic Chinese cuisine. The restaurant chain earned ratings by Michelin Bib Gourmand in 2012 and 2013 and fans rave over Hu’s spicy hot pot and boiled beef in spicy Sichuan sauce.

Another Downtown Evanston Opening: La Macchina Café
Construction on the restaurant and cafe is now underway at 1620 Orrington Ave. Business partners Chris Casas and Marco Ferrarini, both Evanston residents, are also opening a coffee roaster called Coffee Speed Shop in west Evanston, which will be affiliated with the cafe. La Macchina will serve wine, shared plates and weekend brunch, as well as locally roasted coffee.  

Trader Joe's Watch: Facade Work Underway
Construction is nearly complete on the new Trader Joe's on Chicago Avenue in Evanston. The store is expected to open 1211 Chicago Ave. in late August or early September, according to Scott Gendell, president of Terraco, Inc., developer of the site.

Whole Foods Marks 15 Years In Downtown Evanston
